Hello all

I'm seeking recommendations from fellow shooters. I have two projects in mind - both are rifles that will have a forward-mounted scope.

The first project is a CZ 527 in 7.62 X 39. I'll be removing the rear (open) sight and fitting it with an NECG aperture sight at sits on the rear scope mount. I also want to have a forward mounted scope on this rifle - which will involve having a smith attach mounts onto the barrel in a manner much like this so:

I'll be fitting a Leupold FX-II Scout scope.

I use Scout rifles (Steyrs in .308 and .376, and a Ruger in .308) for most of my hunting, so I'd like to have a similar rifle in X39 for two reasons. First is that it's a great cartridge for medium game and moderate ranges. Second is that the CZ 527 is specifically chambered for feeding el-cheapo surplus combloc ammo. That makes it the cheapest centerfire that I can think of for practicing in field positions. After doing Rifle 270 at Gunsite I have become a huge believer in the merits of reactive targets at unknown distances, engaged under time pressure, from realistic field positions. This is great training....but the round count can render it somewhat expensive. Doing it with 7.62X39 would remedy much of that. Once the sight and rings are in place, all that will be left is installing a Ching sling.

The second project is much like the first - I'd like to find a No 4 Mk.1 or Mk.2 (or maybe an Ishapore) that has already been bubba'd, probably with a chopped barrel. I'll then get mounts fitted, and tackle the stock myself - probably by getting a laminate stock set from Boyd's....and going to work with a rasp. I appreciate the beef and heft of a Boyd's stock when prone at the 300 meter line with a .308....but not what I want when carrying the rifle. I have no practical requirement for a .303 (or a third .308) Scout-shaped object....but I figure that it's my patriotic duty as a Canadian to put something in the freezer using an Enfield at some point in my life.

Is anyone able to suggest a smith (ideally in Edmonton, Calgary, or somewhere in between the two) that they've had first hand experience with who would be a good choice for mounting the bases?

Thanks!
