On my heavy barreled M14s I had the underside of a piece of steel picatinny rail blank milled to the same contour of the barrel. The height of the rail was as low as I thought I could get away with and still have enough meat for machine screw holes. I had it milled off to 4 inches in length, and then countersunk 4 holes for machine screws. I then drilled and tapped the match barrel to mount the rail inbetween the chamber and the op rod guide (almost the same position as what you would get with a springfield mount). It works very very well.

I would have included a photograph, however the rig is out getting parkerized right now and will then be bedded in a McMillan M1A stock. Will post photographs when she's back, however this might be a while.

Um, I'm not sure if I understood you correctly, but is this something like what your looking for?

h ttp://ultimak.com/BuyM14.htm

Hope that helps! I found it in ShotgunNews, so I have no idea if your allowed to get these exported from the US..

the ultimak is ideal but sadly not made for the medium or heavy barrel diameter. Brobee, great idea .... i have rail stock.....
the only mount i've seen is the Amega Ranges mount. Looks great and perfect for my needs..... but they have not replied to any of my queries.

I think the Ultimak is your best bet. If it's standard contour, it should fit. They give you a list of what will work at their web site. You should also consider the SA mount.

the medium contour SAI nm barrel is one diameter from the receiver to the oprod guide.....look at krieger's dmr barrel you will see what i mean. The ultimak and sei mounts specifically state they will not fit this contour.... unless i'm on dope and not reading it right :D they will fit the "socom" medium barrel but the diameter of those barrels only run half way to the oprod guide on those.
I really like Brobee's answer to this.... but then again i really like the amega range one as well..... hmmmmm

Just reading on the Amega site, their SOCOM version is said to fit heavier contour barrels, but you said they weren't getting back to you so hmm, you might end up having to make more than stocks ;)

on further inspection of the amega website..... they only show it fitting the socom medium barrel..... if you look at the pics at the bottom of the webpage.... it shows the fat barrel extending 1/2 way from receiver to oprod guide. the barrel i have is that fat all the way to the oprod guide.
I'm gonna go Brobee's route , I'll post pics when i'm done ;)

Good timing. I just called Alberta Precision Rifle (A CGN Dealer again) and he's quoted me 220$ for the Ultimak rail to be brought in for me, all legit. Some guys have had them snatched at the border so I think it's worth the little extra to make sure it gets to you. I think it's the best option for a full length rail, you can push that optic well forward if you want :sniper:

after extensive internet searches..... a chat with the owner of Smith Ent this mornin...... and a phone call to Amega...... it seems there are no scout / handguard rails that fit the full National match medium contour barrel. That's the barrel i have.... the ultimak mount will not fit either. The rear critical mounting points will not fit due to there being no clearance between the oprod and the barrel from the oprod guide to the receiver.
So...... I am thinkin , a rail that starts above the receiver ring and runs forward to one inch past the oprod guide, drilled and tapped to the barrel, then a small rail mounted via dovetail to the stipperclip guide mount..... pin area aneealed, drilled , tapped and re hardened. this will allow a machine screw instaed of a pin to hold this rear mini rail rock solid. allowing traditional scope use or forward optics. hmmmm...... I'm off to see Joe at Dlask :D

no.... this will be a personal project. not going to make a whole new handguard, just the mount. there probably isn't enough guys in canada with nm medm barrels out there to warrant trying to produce a part for market.
