I got a new rifle off the EE just before hunting season, and the optics mount just ahead of the bolt. The rifle was a good package, but it came with a red dot sight, and I was interested in getting a half decent scope to go along with it. I've looked up some decent scopes for decent prices, and have learned that pistol scopes are a decent way to go. It mounts via normal rights to a 1913/weaver/picatinny/whatevertheheck rail, but I was wondering if there were any recommendations from experience for a good, rugged, (cheaper) scope that holds it's zero?

The eye relief on a pistol scope may be too long. Burris and Leupold have offered "Scout" scopes with Intermediate Eye Relief (IER) for years so if they are too expensive new you might find a used one affordable. One is 2.5x and the other 2.75x, can't remember which is which.

More recently Weaver added an IER model to their Classic K series of models. The K4Scout is 4x28mm and it was recently reported that Ellwood Epps has some in, approx $210.

That's about what I was looking to spend, and $100 cheaper than the scope the dude tried to sell me at Sports Outfitters, thank's very much dude!

You won't go far wrong with the K4 Scout, because if you don't like it you can probably sell it to me. I don't need a Scout scope yet but will eventually, and I have a K4 and a K6 with normal eye relief and I like them so it's to be the Weaver for my project.

I like forward-mounted scout scopes, but personally I wouldn't want one that couldn't be dialed down to about 2x or less. The Burris 2-7x scout scope (which has published specs identical to their 2-7x pistol scope, so it's probably the same optic) is just about ideal...eye relief just right, perfect power range. If I were buying a fixed power scout scope, it would be a 2x or 2.5x.

Definitely pay attention to the Tooner's warning about eye relief; a lot of pistol scopes are unusable in the scout scope position because they simply have too much eye relief. It gets worse if you are tall and/or like to "crawl" forward on the gunstock.

I just purchased a Burris 2-7X Scout scope and installed in on my Steyr Scout. (I figured I'd get one before the CDN$ dropped any more against the USD...)

Received the scope and rings (from Amazon.ca, believe it or not...) on Friday, mounted Saturday, and sighted in on Sunday. I was at an indoor range, so the sight-in is only at 50m.

The scope is quite good:
* clarity of the glass is very good
* The reticle has far more "information" available than the "standard" Leupold. This will be useful for longer shots.
* Eye-relief is acceptable for the forward mounting position. More forgiving at 2X than at 7X. At 7X your cheek weld must be "just-so" and the rifle must be well supported. I don't see this as an issue as I'd likely be shooting off my backpack with the magnification dialed up that high.
* Zero seems to be good, but I only fired 30 rounds so time will tell.

I'll try to report more when I have more to report...

I have read excellent reviews from the leupold scout, and always good reviews from the burris scout. Pick the one with the reticle you prefer..
