I have resisted getting a scope mount for my SKS, up to this point.
I am really interested in the scout scope mount. Will it return to zero if removed to clean the gas piston. I would like to use a red dot not a scope but I may use both. The other option is the Choate drill & tap mount, it's good but depending on how far back you mount it can you still use the stripper clips?
Option three is to leave the open sights...maybe firesights.........

Thanks for looking.

they have a rather detailed article on surplusrifle.com. Look it up there as they have been available in th lower 48 longer than up here. Sounded like they like them

I'm waiting until there's a good supply of cheap non corrosive ammo before trying the scout mount. Too much disasembly hassle till then.

Looks like a nice place to put a red dot though

Marstar is the only outlet for them as Scoutmount won't ship here

news to me . if you look at their website under customer feedback they have a comment from an Ontario resident. Their ordering system allows for Canadian addresses.

they don't list VZ58 mounts on their site .MArstar has those. I bought one from Marstar and the VZ58 bases are different from the AK ones.

Having said that it's possible Scoutscope stopped shipping to Canada because of US commerce dept rules but there were recently relaxed.

Did you or has anybody called them?

I tried to order direct about a week before Marstar started selling them. They would not ship to Canada. So I picked one up from Marstar. They are machined to tight tolerences and return to zero after removal.

free trade at its best........It really sucks when you see great deals advertised in the states and they won't ship to kanada, so you wind up paying double if you can even find the same thing here.
The 50.00 scout scope mount for the sks down in the states sells for 100.00 through marstar if you're able to get someone on the phone that knows anything.

Or...Last I checked Kalinkaoptics shipped to Canada.

The SKS scope:

Calibrated for 7.62x39 ammo, an illuminated reticule with range finder...sweet, that's what I'm holding our for. :D

How far to the rear can you mount a red dot?

Can one be mounted over the receiver and still work? I always see them mounted forward on the rifle.

The russian mount is really nice but I'm a lefty shooter so I think that puts me out of contention on that one.

Yes, you can mount them on the receiver. There's no eye relief or magification to affect where you mount it. On my AR, I've got my Comp M2 on a cantilever mount that goes out over the handguard.

Hmm thats another one for the Choate mount. I'm really torn over what to do with this SKS. I know I want to upgrade the sights but I don't know what I'm gonna do. Firesights, Mojo, Choate, scope or red dot. Somebody help me.

I do know I've ruled out the scoutmount as it has to come off for cleaning and I'm done with that since I shoot whatever is cheepest.

I like the Choate drill and tap mount, I use a fairly large scope 2.5X10 - 40 Tasco so the stripper clips are out. I did get a Tapco stock that has the rail on the gas tube. I thought, yeah right... but for ####s and giggles I mounted a RedDot scope. It actually did well on holding zero and was a pleasure to use. I still prefer the Choate but still pleasantly surprised with the Tapco mount.

Yup, took off the gas piston and tube, remounted it and tested it again. It held zero out at 200 yards.

Huh, thats surprising. I guess it works well since it is designed to work with the stock. I've hears only bad things about that style mount. Not that I question you or your experiance.

What kind of red dot did you use?
