Anyone that's melting down reclaimed bullets;

What are you getting per pound for skimmed off copper jackets?

I know that they're typically 'gilding metal' (95% copper, 5%zinc).

What are they classifying it as at the yards? #2 copper? Red brass? Brass?

For reference, everything I have is clean (new condition clean). No brass jackets. It's not picked out of the berm or ground.

Our club sells the copper jackets but they're mixed in the dross skimmed off the melted lead so there are all kinds of impurities (paper, lead residue, etc.) I think they're paying us about 25 cents a pound which doesn't sound like much but previously we had been throwing it in the garbage so it's better than nothing. Scrapyards get pretty fusssy when there is other stuff mixed in with more valuable metals like copper and brass. They even gave us less for 22 cases unless we sifted out all the range dust, paper target scraps, etc.

wow......only 25c/#?! the lead is worth anywhere from 50-75c/#

Been a long while since I was hauling metal to a scrap yard, but they only paid decent on stuff that was clean and shiny. Even the guys who burnt off the insulation of pure copper wire took a downgrade over those that stripped it.

Talk to the scrap yard. Unless you have a drum full, it's probably not worth the gas money to get it there.

I will potentially have tons ;)

Maybe I'll wash the copper with acid to pretty it up a little

Call around, ask 5 scrappers and get 5 prices is my experience. Changes with the weather almost, cleaner the better.
Be prepared for the price to lower once you are off loaded. Slimy bunch in my experience dealing with them for 20 years.
Talk to the boss and get the quote in writing if dealing in quantity.

Last year I sold about a hundred pounds or so of brass cases (old, split, corroded, etc.) and I believe they were paying about $2/pound. I'm guessing copper is worth at least what brass is so you could be looking at a fair chunk of change. They will drop the price unless it's clean and relatively pure, however.

Check this guy out and learn a few tips and tricks.
