Hi,

I bought a used gun and it's got a couple of scratches on the hard chrome finish (a couple on the slide and 1 by the slide stop...I believe its called and "idiot scratch").

The idiot scratch is deep enough that it is shiny, leaving me to believe that the hard chrome may have been penetrated through as I believe hard chrome is very thin and it catches when I run a finger nail across it.

The others are fairly light and the finger nail doesn't catch.

I'm using the finger nail "technique", the same I use when trying to determine how deep a scratch is on the paint/clear coat of a car...if a finger nail catches, it's too deep to buff and will require more agressive polishing and abrasives.

Anyhow, I'm wondering if hard chrome can be polished to remove these irritating scratches.

Thanks,

Hard chrome will be shiny if scratched. How bad a situation you have depends on what kind of hard chroming it is, how thick the chrome is and the top finish. Buffing, polishing or sanding will make the shiny part bigger.

Yike!

Not sure what type of hard chrome it is as I bought the gun second hand...looks like either I polish the whole thing to blend in the scratch (which is more work than I'm looking for) or I live with this annoying scratch...

It's such a minor thing but in my eyes it stands out like a sore thumb!!!

hard to remove scratchs from chrome because any type of abrasive will mark the finish. Can't really buff it like most automotive finishes.
