Hey guys,

I recently purchased a used 308 Garand. I noticed that the chamber has some pretty deep gouges .

Just wondering if these are something to be worried about?

I already took it to the range once and did get two stoppages where the clip was trying to jump out prematurely, not sure if thats related.

The classic indicator of a rough chamber is when cases won't extract or the extractor chews throgh the rim. You aren't reporting either of these problems.

The chamber of an M1 Garand must be kept clean and free of fouling. That's why the Garand combo tool has a brass brush. Clean the chamber with powder solvent and a bush, then wipe clean and oil lightly.

A rough chamber interior can be polished with steel wool, but this must be done carefully to avoid increasing headspace. That's best left to someone with the knowledge and proper equipment.

Your pics show some fairly deep gouges on the breech area of the barrel above the chamber. Deformed metal in this area can interfere with proper feeding and extraction. I've cleaned these up with a cratex polishing tip, but one must go slowly and carefully.

Thank you for the detailed response.

Think I'll just take it to my gunsmith (gunco) to clean the area up.

Cheers
