screws for mounting weaver base on a Savage

Let me know if this is the right forum for this question, but I'm trying to mount a weaver base onto a Savage 10 FP. The screws that came with the base are too long for the front two holes, the back ones seem fine. :mad:

I guess the easiest solution is to get slightly shorter screws or grind the ones I have down a milimeter, but I'd rather go with the former.

Does anyone know if the screws are standard size, what it might be, and what do gunsmiths typically do when they encounter this problem?

are the screws interfering with chambering or bolt travel? or are they not holding the base down properly.
i beleive they are 6-48.
as for the length you might just as easily file them down
 
It is mandatory to file to fit both front base screws for a Savage. Take your time and do it correctly. Make sure the rear screw on the front base does not extend past the body and into the action opening because the bolt head will get hung up on it. The front screw must not contact the barrel threads when installed.

The last set of Weaver bases that installed, the rear base screws were a hair too long so the bolt wouldn't fit inside the action, I just took a file and a some pliers and placed the screw (one at a time) in the pliers and ground the screws down on the file until they didn't protrude through the action and no longer interefered with the bolt in the action.

It's assumed that you know what you're doing.

Just shorten the offending screws.
 
In order to do a nice job of shortening screws, build a "screw gizzy" by drilling a hole in a piece of 1/8 bar stock, tap it for 6/48 and then you screw the 6/48 screw in it and grind off the protruding end. This dresses the threads when you screw it out. It also gives you a positive way to hold the screw when using a grinder to shorten it.
