scruffy coyotes?

Saw a yote yesterday that looked like he needed a good brushing. Is it too early for the winter coat to be falling out? Don't the COs or F/W groom these things? We need to be told. Anyone?

Breeding season is on and they are getting rubbed unless of course it was mangey

mangey was my first thought as well. did it have near bald patches?

If you find one with mange best thing u can do is kill it. It spreads to other coyotes and gives them painfull croch rot as well as sore bones and they wont last the next winter anyway.

No, I've seen mange lots of times and this was'nt it. He looked very shaggy and even a bit rusty red coloured. He was on a dead run and just stopped for a second. I hit the deck and got the scope on him before he ducked down a hole. And before anyone asks, it was a big yote, not a fox.
I've seen some real nice ones when I've been driving along the highway lately, but this guy alnost looked like he was moulting.
