A longshot here (no pun intended), but does anyone have information - or reference material - about AG-42 rifles being used in commercial hunting applications, esp. sealing on the Atlantic coast(s)?

Thanks.

Yes indeed.

Some of these guns were used in the Newfoundland sealing industry and a few have found their way into collectors hands. They were bought as military surplus rifles; and were prized for their accuracy, semi auto actions, and large magazine.

I once had one that had the name "MV Fogo Isle" electro-penciled on the side of the frame, ( it was common for the ship to engrave it's name on their guns). It was your basic AG-42, with no special additions, but the barrel was well worn, which was a common problem with these (and basically all) guns used for sealing, which saw a lot of rounds put through the barrel and not well cleaned or stored afterwards.

I have seen a number since, but none recently.

I don't believe you will find any information on that. The Norwegian Krags were used and were plentiful in the 70's.
most if not all of the sealing industry was in decline (thank Green Peace) when the Swedish surplus was on the Canadian market in quantity.
I bought 2 ag42s from S.I.R. $79.95 each for caribou hunting around 1979. nobody that had seen my rifles back then had any clue what they were. Central Newfoundland.
thinking about it, all the times I went to smellies house as a teenager I don't recall him having an ag42. although his mg42 was nice.
