How deep are you guys seating these bullets for OAL?

I have mine seated 2.750 OAL and still see the top bullet rib just above the edge of the mouth of the casing...

I thought factory loaded had no bullet rib showing at all....seated deeper...

Thoughts?

Barnes recommends that you start at .050" off of the lands, and that seems to work well in most rifles.I have never seated them closer than .030" or farther than .070" off of the lands to achieve the best accuracy.

Stubblejumper's info is correct. I follow those same guidelines with TSX's.

Don't worry about what factory loads had showing. You are reloading now and the point would be to customize the reloads to your specific rifle.

So now what do I have to buy $$$ to measure the lands..or should I just play with it within the the .070 and .050

Do you have a caliper to measure your OAL?

just to add...seating with the last rib just below the edge of the mouth puts me at 2.700 oal...with the rib visible... 2.750 oal...

Those numbers really are meaningless, unless you know the distance to the lands with the 140gr TSX in your gun.

yes..

Don't worry about OAL or the ribs on the bullet right now.

As SJ said, figure out the distance to the lands with that specific bullet. If you need to know how to do so, ask and one of us can explain it to you.

I have no idea...I know the lands and the rifling,...but no idea how to measure with a soecific bullet with the bolt closed...

Please do expalin the process...

You could simply seat the bullets very long and try and close the bolt.Keep seating them deeper .005" at a time until you can close the bolt with no resistance. It won't be exact, but it will be in the ballpark. Then seat the bullets .050" shorter.

COAL will differ on all rifles. Usually the magazine limits the lenght of the round. To find where A bullet touches the lands, slightly neck size the brass( unprimed, with no powder), so you can seat the bullet by hand with some resistance, leave the bullet seated way out. Load the round, close the bolt. Gently extract round. Measure the COAL. Thats were that bullet is hitting the lands for that riffle and bullet.

Pretty happy with my first attempt at reloading...

I would really like to load up 5 more 48.0 gr and 5 more 48.5 gr and shoot 5 shot groups... perhaps I will.:)

I was amazed watching the group go tighter and tighter and then at 49.0 (perhaps even at 48.5, not sure...) start to open up.

I had no issues with pressure and found the loads quite comfortable...

Now I need to buy Chrony... had one once...had little use for it and sold it...
Guess I should have tried this years ago...

Thanks guys... it's fun !!! :sHa_shakeshout:

I cut the neck of a case with a hacksaw and leave that case in my die box. Similar to partial neck sizing but a bit more crude maybe, but it has worked for me for finding the seating depth at the lands. Then I usually seat a bit deeper. I have just worked up a load in my 7mm-08 with barns 120 TSX and found that one groove was out of the case. After finding a decent load like that (1 1/4") I tried seating the bullets deeper, hiding the last groove and I got three groups in a row at 7/8"......
