seating problem

I have been seating my bullets at different depths trying to find the one my gun likes best. The problem im having is 4 will be the perfect depth then the next will be 5 one thousands shorter. This is using new brass and hornady.224 match bullets.i pulled the bullet and tried it again-same results .i have a rock chucker supreme press and hornady dies. It must be the bullets not being exactly the same.i also took the die apart and cleaned it.any ideas? Ps-it seems they are always shorter.thanks for replies
 
I had this with the EXACT setup you are using, I bought a comparator so that I could measure to the ogive of the bullet and not the tip.

My comparator measurements were much closer together than OAL to the tip measurements.

Like others have stated in other threads to me, get your depth on your seating die and leave it!
 
agreed with messureing off bullet tips being a poor way of doing it, on the poly tiped bullets its not such a big deal since they dont tend to varry as much, but try messruing off a soft tip round. after being in a box and shiped and who knows how many times they have been droped your COAL can be varring greatly, if had as much as 7/1000 different in overal on soft nose bullets simply due to the nose being mashed up from shipping
 
im measuring the coal. i found 1.170 to be the most accurate length,but it will go from 1.170 down to 1.165 without changing anything.it will go back to 1.170 after i try another bullet. the bullets are hollow points and dont look damaged.
 
If you are just measuring cartridge overall length, then your problem is that bullet lengths vary, especially the nose. That is likely your source of variation. It is just a measurement error, not a real error.
