I am thinking about getting a Glock 17 as my second firearm. My first gun was a .22 GSG 1911 which I am currently enjoying.

I believe the Glock 17 will be a good 9mm for me based on the price and track record of the gun.

I'm just looking to get some current advice from people about the purchase. I used the search function and read through quite a few threads.

I have heard(read) the Gen 4's have had more issues then past models. Is this still true? It seems like if I can find a Gen 3, I should just get that for peace of mind. Can they still be found new? Where?

Do all Glocks come with accessory rails?

Anyways, I'll appreciate any info on the subject.

Gen1 - haven't owned, so no personal experience with them. No accessory rail.

Gen2 - have owned a couple. Awesome guns. No accessory rail, so if you don't care about the rail, I'd suggest picking up one of these. They're usually pretty cheap, as most people seem to want a Gen3 or newer.

Gen3 / 3.5 - Gen3 and Gen3.5 have rails. I have owned a couple of each, and currently own a 3.5 G17, G19, and G20 They have all been excellent guns.

Gen 4 - I have no experience with them. They do have rails.

No problems with the Gen 1-3.5 G17 i've owned. All worked 100% and most parts are swappable.

You can't go wrong.

Go to the range, bring some factory 9mm, ask nicely and most will let you try their firearm. Pistols are very personal, comfortable grip is vital to successful shooting, have to caress her, shoot her before you bring her home unless you like selling on EE.

My favorites are:
Glock 17 Gen 4 (or Glock 19 Gen 3)
CZ shadow
Beretta 92F
NP29 - 1911 grips don't work for me.

Haven't shoot a SIG in 20+ yrs, nice shooters, costly.

GSG 1911 is fun but with no recoil you can get away with improper grip. 9mm has some recoil, gonna grip a 45ACP properly.
