see thru mounts?

is there anything inherently bad or less good about kwik site or other see thru mounts? any reason not to use them? sound like a good idea for iron sight backup, versatility? any drawbacks?

I usually prefer to mount a scope as close to the barrel as possible. It feels a little weird and awkward llike you're peeking over something when you lift your head and chin up so high off the stock
 
They raise your scope quite a bit and on a gun that is designed to place your eye at the right plane to use open sights you will never get a proper weld to the stock to shoot with a scope properly. If it is a stock designed for scope use then you can never get a shot with the open sights. Not really good for anything IMHO.

all of the above, plus any of the rings I've seen are so cheap/weak that you can pretty much flex the scope by hand. My uncle lost a really nice buck quite a few years ago because he couldn't find it in either the scope or the sights underneath. His head was going up and down like some kind of demented chicken. My dad and I nearly wet ourselves laughing.
 
See throughs can be very useful for cold weather hunting. Getting your head behind a low scope while wearing a parka can be a struggle. In addition, one exhalation at the wrong moment, and your ocular is well frosted. Whether the scope is too high for comfort really depends on the rifle and your shooting style.
 
I bought a see though rail for my 10/22, and after mounting a red dot on top of it, there was too much top heavy weight creating a lot of torque on the tiny screws. Almost stripped the soft aluminum receiver where the screws went in. I removed the see through rail and it is now sitting in my drawer.
