Hello Everyone

I am looking for a 223 box mag rifle. I walk around the mountains a lot with my 308 savage pc10 but with the weight I don't like to hike vary long. So I am looking for a light rifle that I can walk around with and would prefer a mag than I can have 10 rounds if possible! And since this is going to be a bush gun cheep is better and only need to reach a max of 200 yard. Any ideas?

thanks everyone

I don't know of any .223's with tubular magazines... they are all box magazines. Several of those are available with detachable magazines but I believe you would have to go aftermarket to get a 10 round magazine.

What's your limit on price?

For a cheap, light gun look at the Savage Axis line. The Axis II comes with the accutrigger, and I think can be bundled with a scope of some sort. I have a Model 11 Predator in 223, but it has a heavier barrel on it. Very accurate, I'm the problem not the gun!

I also like the idea behind the Mossberg MVP but haven't owned one. AR magazines are cheap and plentiful, but you are stuck at the 5 cartridge limit with them.

There is a used box fed .223 bolt action rifle at Calgary shooting center right now.... its some sort of Police gun... just noticed it sitting on a shelf last night when I was looking around. Cant remember the price, But you should check it out since your in Calgary.

Another option could possibly be the new Troy Defense Pump AR thing. It takes AR mags, is lightweight, very scopeable, and apparently is reasonably accurate.

I'll second the Mossberg (don't roll your eyes... yes, I'm looking at you...) MVP Varmint. I just recently got one and was myself skeptical on the whole Mossberg thing... until I got it to the range. Tack... Driver. Straight out of the box I was getting close to 1 MOA, repeatable, with regular factory ammo and I know with some tweaking this will be a sub-MOA shooter. So, cheap (Cabela's has it on sale for under $700 right now), takes AR mags so you can get the 10 round LAR15s for this and a very nice grey laminate stock; free float medium barrel.
