Seeking Info on Bren Gun mags

If they could do it with the Lees in NZ to make the Charlton, I'm sure you could do it with the No.4; the real question is "Why?"

As SDC pointed out, the MLE based Charleton used Bren magazines, but I will be darned if I know how it was done. Put a Bren magazine up to a Lee Enfield receiver, and you will see what the problem is.

SDC that's a Rieder Automatic Rifle designed in South Africa not a Charlton. This is a Charlton

It looks like they used spring loaded side plates above the trigger and an adjustable catch in the front to allow the use of both the original mag and the Bren mag.

All I have on the Rieder is a one page description, after I am done researching the Charlton I may see what else I can dig up on it. There is not a lot of public domain information on any of the Enfield auto conversions.

thats an understatement.

Keep us informed on what you find.

oh and that is the first picture I've ever seen of the charlton on the internet :runaway:

Somewhere around here I have a copy of the patent application that was filed for the Charleton. 9 pages-ish I think. Descriptive, but hard to read the first couple of times through.

I have it buried in here somewhere....I'll see what I can dig out.

Images of a privately owned Charlton in New Zealand and pictures from his gun show display. I have been in contact with a friend of the gentleman who owns this rifle and am trying to get more pictures.

The patent filed on 28 Nov 1941 is 12 pages long and describes the operation of the rifle. The original rifle was just supposed to use regular Enfield mags and was later adapted for the Bren mag.

So far I have had little success with getting anything from the New Zealand government but am still trying. The MOD pattern room does have some of the original drawings for the rifle but they cannot locate them right now, they may be in storage.
