G’day,

Recently acquired the a/n rifle and trying to decipher some markings.

It appears to be converted from a BSA SMLE, as the butt socket is stamped GR surmounted by the Crown, BSA Co, and though scrubbed dates appear to read 1911, with Sht 22 over IV.

My question is, on the Nock’s Form it is stamped PH in large case, and on close inspection it appears the barrel has been sleeved.

I am aware early on SMLEs were converted to 22 trainers being “parkerifled” and stamped such on the muzzle, but can not find a reference for the PH, though I understand Parker Hale also did later conversions to 22.

Insight would be appreciated.

Cheers.

If the markings don't match up. I would think that at some time it was re-barreled. I have 5 or 6 of these every one is different.

Hi SRM555. My guess is that Parker Hale lined the barrel and judging by the black suncorite finish it was post WW2. Your foresight needs some adjustment too. I have yet to find one of these Mk IV* rifles that is anywhere near the accuracy of the Canadian No.7 .22. All the Canadian Mk IV* rifles were used beyond belief. Like me - well worn but not yet forgotten. Your rifle was an early conversion which is marked IV rather than IV*. John

Yes my Cno7 is a tack driver but I wonder if my C broad arrow no12 martini trainer can’t give it a run for its money? But I sure enjoy shooting one of my old mk5 trainers especially with the Ross/cooey rear sight.
