Looking for a good scope, good view from short ranges out to around 1000m. Presently I am contemplating the Night Force 3.5 - 15 x 50 with the MLR reticle with ilumination. Any first hand knowledge out there? Or a possible alt' scope to mount on a AR-15 and AR-10 with 24" hvy floated barrel, both are flat tops.

First choice Nightforce,

Second Choice Leupold

Third IOR (should be better quality these days)

Schmidt and Bender likely is #1 but given the cost I think the law of diminishing returns applies. If cash is not an option, I would seriously look at these.

As Joe mentioned, Nightforce is excellent bang for buck. They are not all that cheap but quality and performance is generally very high for what you pay. I was much more impressed with my Nightforce than my Leopold. Originally I was just a phone call away from buying a Schmidt Bender. If you ever get one of these in your hands, its the holy grail of sniper optics, or any optics for that matter. I have put my eye to every high priced name brand scope out there and the Schmidt Bender is incredible, however, at twice the price of the Nightforce, as a nice surprize, the Nightforce was close. Not as good, there was a difference, but not twice the price difference.

US Optics also make a very high quality piece of glass, but they are in the same boat as the Schmidt Bender. Lots of $$$.

If your looking for a great product for the cash, go take a look at the Nightforce line. As a side note, their customer service is great as well.

Good luck.

I've read a lot of good things about the Nikon tactical series, some say it's between Leupold and Nightforce, prices are good too.

I'm gonna throw in a vote for US Optics. They're pretty much written off everyone's shopping list early because of the price. One of the BIG differences between USO and all other brands including S&B is that USO riflescopes are custom.

Buying a US Optic scope, easy as not, can be a matter of starting out with which ever of their standard models most closely resembles your needs, then specifying all the detail you can imagine. They'll even custom make a reticle to your specifications! USO costs $$$ but they're truly in a league of their own when it comes to giving you exactly what you want IMHO. And quality ? You bet;) !

I just picked up and mounted the S&B 5 - 25 X 56mm PM-II with Double turn Elev. & Illuminated P4 reticle today.:D

It is AWESOME!!!!! , and the fit/finish is impeccable.

The Glass is crystal clear and the images are bright with 34mm tube and 56mm objective.

The P4 reticle looks to be the cat's ass.:p

Yes, It was expensive:rolleyes: , but worth the money (and sacrifice of my last remaining M14).

That being said, there is nothing wrong with Nightforce or Leupold.I have used Leupold Mark IV scopes for years without any problems.

When it comes to optics, buy quality and buy once.

Skullboy, please post some pictures when you have a chance.

I have only had one USOPTICS and unfortunately it was a big disappointment. You cannot really draw a conclusion from one scope but it sure makes you wonder about their QA.

I'm sure this isn't entirely representative of the line but I have also had issues with either anticants.

I have an S&B 5-25 x 56 as well, mounted on my TRG 22. After Skullboy saw mine he had to buy one. I will also say that this scope is double plus super excellent.

I just need some Butler Creek caps for mine now....... and a Sunshade.............

That's funny, mine came with butler creek covers brand new in the white S&B box. I thought about ordering a sunshade but I think it will make the scope look a little long.

Some came with the Butler Creeks, and some came with the see though "bikini" style covers.I got the Bikini style.

Skullboy can I ask what kind of rings you have mounted the scope with. Are they the TSR SS mediums ? And I must say a very impressive scope !!
And for a new guy what would the learning curve be? (in rounds) I had to ask as I just got a Leupold mil dot.
Thanks

The rings are Badger Ordnance High Alloy rings in 34mm. There are not a lot of rings available in 34mm.

The Nightforce for me was the best bang for the buck.

When I started looking at the USO, S&B ect it was more scope than I needed at the time of purchase.

The Nightforce was priced a couple hundred above the top end Leupolds.

I believe you will be happy. We have not had one return or one disappointed customer from all of our Nightforce sales.

Regards,

Joe
