I was out muzzle loader hunting for deer, in my usual spot in Southern Manitoba, a place where I have never seen elk, nor have I heard reports of elk. Well, I saw one walk past me about 60 yards away. At first I clicked off my safety, but then it immediately registered, that isn't a deer, not even a mule deer. As it turned, I clearly saw the dark brown neck and head of a cow elk. A very exciting encounter. Only saw one deer, and it was too far off to make an ethical shot, so I didn't. Oh well, an excellent day in the woods.

I remember my first "wild" elk sighting. I was making the drive West, moving to Saskatchewan. A few kms into Manitoba I spotted my first elk, spread across the highway. :(

I have read that Manitoba was home to North America's largest species of elk (now extinct). Sorry, do not recall the species at this moment...perhaps someone else can chime in.
Nice to hear that some elk are moving back into your area!

There’s getting to be some sizeable herds in south western Manitoba. Some good sized groups in areas without a licensed season yet and problem herds where there is. As usual the government is slow to react, hopefully they won’t be the next victim of CWD and professional snipers. 🤬
