Does anyone have any recommendations on how to extract a seized choke tube? Picked up a shotgun in a camo finish but I can't break the choke tube out of the barrel and with the finish on it I can't heat up the outside of the barrel. Would inserting dry ice into the barrel crack the threads open or do I need to take this to a gunsmith?

You hold the wrench in a lathe chuck and push the barrel onto it with a center in the tail stock. This prevents the wrench from slipping out of it's engagement when you start turning the barrel ... a little at a time backing some of the pressure off as the length grows with the tube coming out...

And I just completed doing this (March11 PM) and I had to heat the barrel as well... and a 12 inch Crescent on the tube wrench. Everything now cleaned and Anti-Seized.

After you get it out lube with automotive anti-seize goop on the threads after cleaning. Also heat resistant.Harold

I took a very stuck choke out with tranny fluid. Soaked it over night in the brides laundry tub. Just stand the barrel up in can . Worked great for me . The gun went through a house fire and was impossible to get out. This method worked great.

Will the tranny fluid affect the camo finish?

Never had a seized choke but regular maintenance and cleaning goes a long way. Plus I can never settle on a choke so I am changing them all the time. I have also heard of the diesel soak.

There would never be a stuck tube if they were all lubricated with Anti-Seize or Never-Seize. It is recommended.

Take the barrel off the gun and stand the choke end in a jar with an inch or two of diesel in it. Let it stand overnight at least, longer if you can. Dry the barrel really good, inside and out and then have a go. If you have to resort to heat then do it slowly and evenly at the muzzle.

If its not semi auto get your local black powder nut to load you a half dozen shells. Fired quickly they will heat the barrel evenly without affecting the finish, take out tube, clean gun, antisieze threads! Black will get a barrel freakin hot in a hurry!

Certainly you have a point about not wanting to ruin the finish. I have removed a number of these using only a little heat from either a hair dryer or a heat gun but certainly be careful with the latter.

I'd dip the last 4" or so of barrel in a can of good penetrating oil for a few days and then apply a bit of heat and see if it comes loose. Has worked for me numerous times. Apply some anti seize, reinstall, and you're good to go.

ATF will not affect the camo finish. Diesel fuel and penetrating oil (depending on how the camo finish was applied) will affect it. I would recommend placing the tube wrench in the vise and using the leverage of the gun to unscrew it.

I get it free from work, and it's awesome. I've seen a Kroil table at the last big Easter Gun Show in Calgary, but try google to track some down.

Cooling or heating won't crack the barrel, but shock cooling could crack it. A little dry ice inside and a hair dryer on the outside might do the trick. Of course, a couple days in WD40 wouldn't hurt either.

Just don't get it smoking hot and then dip it in a colder media. The results can be disasterous.

A good soak in
Or any penetrating oil and then use a heat gun shouldn't wreck the camo. I've used both of theses methods and both are very safe to use.

Make sure you do this after you remove it.

Thanks for the advice from everyone. I bought the gun with the seized tube so if I can get it out I'll make sure to lube it with a good choke lube before I put it back in.
