I am going to be starting to collect parts and pieces for a rifle build. Even though I love the Ruger tang safety and have my 280 built on that action I am told it is not a good platform to build on. I would like to know what you people think is a good economical action to start with. My rifle budget will be in the $400 - $500 range, cheaper would be good LOL. The rifle will be a 338-06

Thank you for your suggestions.

Correct me if I have misinterpreted what the $400-500 will be used for.
$400 may get you a rifle, but the barrel will be a similar amount and gunsmithing will be another 400, and scope, rings, dies will add another $400.
This may not be accurate but a short course in Rifle Building 101 unless you have accumulated the parts in such a way as to hide the costs while studying Wife Deception 338-06.

Nothing wrong in selecting an old model Ruger M77 action for your build. Just remember they are not controlled feed like the latest Hawkeye action from Ruger.
If you budget is maxed out to $500 you better be doing your own work and using a used Stevens action. Now to find a barrel for next to nothing, good luck!

You can build a hunting rifle on just about any bolt action and have excellent hunting accuracy if a quality barrel is installed correctly. If it is a two lug action there are none better than a 700 as far as I am concerned... and there are many 3 lug actions to choose from. I particularly like the Browning X Bolt.

Were you told that the Ruger action was not a good action to build on???? Were any reasons given why that action is no good?? Certainly there is not a huge amount of aftermarket parts for the Ruger MK I like there is for the Mauser 98, Win 70, Rem 700 etc. So if you are happy with the std bottom metal, trigger, stock etc I see no reason you couldn't use the Ruger action for your build. Maybe all you need is a donor rifle and a 338 cal barrel. I think you will be hard pressed to get much more on a $ 400- $ 500 budget.
On the plus side the Ruger action is strong, the trigger is adjustable and the tang safety is very handy. I wouldn't be afraid to build a hunting rifle on the Ruger action. Good Luck
