I recently picked up a box of Sellier & Bellot 6.5x55 156 grain SP: Anyone put one of these through a deer or other big game?

The velocity is ho-hum at 2400 ish fps but man do they shoot in my 96!

Thanks,

Why do you say no-hum 2400fps?

I tried to chamber military RN in my 6.5x55mm and they will not chamber, my rifle is an M38 though so not as long a throat.

If it shoots that bullet well then why not use it, I expect that it would be like any other cup and core RN bullet.

The manufacturer's claimed muzzle velocity is 2,371 fps so you're doing well.

From what I had read in beginning of 1900 a lot of professional hunters in Africa agreed that best killing speed is 2400FPS. Since then we go bigger and faster. Do we need to? No. We get more meat damage and laziness of estimating distance, that is all.
2400FPS will do just fine .

Relatively slow muzzle velocity with extremely high SD at 0.32. Formidable penetration on any big game and used for moose in Scandinavia. Range is 230 yards max. Very accurate in my rifle too. In fact the S&B cartridges are the most accurate factory fabrics in my sporterized 96 Mauser: 1.25 moa at 100 yards with the 140 grain and a 4 power scope..
