This is rather odd on the boxes......the small rifle states for small rifle ,pistol or revolver and has green priming compound? The small pistol says for rifle ,pistol or revolver and has blue priming compound ? Both are 4.4 mm diameter boxer. I wonder if small rifle is comparable to small rifle magnum primers and the pistol primer comparable to a standard small rifle? Never seen this on Domestic made primers.Any insight?

I have both, and they are different. The box is confusing, and while i have used the SRP in pistol applications (mainly 357 mag loads) i would not use the SPP in rifle loads, they definitely have a softer cup.

I always questioned if these primers work the same, must be old stock by Winchester.

I think what you are seeing is a generic statement on the box.

All the boxes say "Primers for rifle, pistol or revolver cartridges" and the end flap is stamped "Large Pistol (5.3 Boxer)" or "Small Pistol (4.4 Boxer)" or ... etc.

Saves on printing costs.

If you know the "flash value" of your primers you can play games switching between small pistol magnum and small rifle standard and such. I'm using small rifle standard for all my small primer needs for example. S&B must be doing something similar.
