Selling a bear rug (legality)

I don't know about BC, but the only value in wildlife parts, including hides is the cost of the taxidermy that went into them, and you better be able to prove that cost... unless you are a licenced trapper. Some parts are illegal to even possess... ie. black bear gall bladders.

AFAIK, as long it was harvested legally has a number by the taxidermist or hunting licence or number on it I believe it is legal. To be 100% sure call the BC COs office.

Gall bladders aren't illegal to possess everywhere. In Ontario they are.

I saw some 20,000$ polar bear rugs being sold in Montreal when I was there in June... That's one hell of a taxidermist if that's the case.

In most cases, it is illegal to sell taxidermy in Ontario. You will need to check the laws in the privince you reside. it is apparently illegal to even advertise taxidermy for sale, even if you dont go through with the transaction. If your province has similar laws, be sure that MNR is watching the ad and will like send an undercover agent to complete the sale and obtain the evidence to press charges. If you do a quick google search, you'll quickly see what i mean

Just a quick question
Is it legal to sell a bear rug here in BC?

Well guys he is from BC... The lower mainland to be exact.
What is it you a re wanting to do, buy or sell?
Contact any of the guys who do taxidermy and ask how you might proceed legally in your quest.
One can buy Black Bear hides in Banff that have been tanned.
How they came to be is any buddy's guess.
Rob

Completely legal to sell a bear rug in BC, for whatever $$$ you can get for it. Fresh, tanned, mounted- whatever. All legal.

Only stipulation is that it must have been harvested legally and the HL and tag # must accompany it. Basically get the seller to give a letter with the info on it to the buyer. And you need to pay a royalty to the crown, as specified in the regulations.

It's your property, so do what you want with it.

Don't you possess one as soon as you harvest an animal?

In BC, the gall bladder rule is that you may not possess it separate from the bear carcass. I often question if it's a good rule, since you could proabbly replace the illegal trade in bear parts by supplying legally harvested parts.

In Ontario the gall bladder must remain with the entrails, if field dressed the fall must remain with the "guts". If you remove the gall bladder at all, or have it on your person separate from the carcass, your ass is grass...and the MNR will light it on fire

^^^ This pretty much sums it up.

That used to be the case... the problem was, that a certain element was using the legal harvest as a smoke screen to move illegal parts... before this became law, there was a local Asian doctor who bought all gall bladders brought to hum.

In BC it is legal to move it with the carcass. But it must be removed and disposed of within 48 hours of the kill. (Pg 8-9 in the Hunting Regulations) Either way I do it either in the field or after transporting I cut the gall to make it useless before disposing of it.

Legal to sell "processed" black bear rug in Ontario last I heard. Have also seen several tanned skins available for retail sale ... coyote, wolf & black bear at several locations.

Yes like the Ministry of No Response is going to do much in Ontario? They haven't done anything in years there. No budget.

Strange how much variance there is province to province. In NS we can take a dried gall to DNR and have it tagged then legally sell it.
