Talking with my students the other day in Wildlife class about the illegal / legal sale of trophies. Be it deer, bear, moose etc...,

This question was posed to me:

"Would you sell a trophy rack / mount to a collector who was willing to a pay premium amount"?

My answer was "if all the legal satutes were covered in the sale of wildlife parts was satisfied and if I could get an exact replica of my mount / rack then yes."

What do you guys think?

I've got a few racks kicking around, nothing spectacular, that I would sell if it was legal. I've got no problems parting with them.

I think the reasoning behind the ban is to prevent poachers from having a market, and therefore an incentive to poach

I have never sold a rack, but have given lots of them away to folks who will never have an opportunity to hunt moose or caribou.

You still need to get a permit to give them to someone. At least, you do here in the Yukon.

In Ontario I believe you can sell 1 trophy or buy 1 trophy before you need to have a permit, then you are not a dealer. I do not know if this is still the case but it was a few years back. For our camp I am the guy who mounts all the racks, no matter what the size, if the individual who shot it does not want it then in comes back to the camp in a year to hang some coats or hats. I don't think I could ever sell a mount to a collector, but I might donate to a worthy cause or give it to a friend.

I've donated many racks as well. Many of my students like to make fire pokers and knives with bone handles.

The question was born after a discussion about world class / record harvested game.

At a certain point, you end up with racks and bear hides spilling out of every orifice of your house.:)

I don't see the problem with selling your property...

In Ontario you cannot legally sell any set of antlers with the exception of one set of SHED antlers per year.

So if the antlers are still on the skull, you cannot legally sell them in Ontario.
