hey I was wondering what kind of semi-auto .22 do people like now that the 10/22 has a 10 round mag limit, .22 with larger magazine sizes I've found are the marlin 795, gsg-15/stg-44. I'm a bit of fan of taticalcool style, if anyone else has Ideas.

Squires and Bingham Model 20's are a hoot! Very accurate too. Can still be found dirt cheap used. Mags are a ##### to find so make sure you have at least one spare.
I also highly recommend the Rem 597. Some people say they have had bad experiences. I bought mine like new off the EE for $180 shipped. It's extremely accurate, has been dead reliable.
Slap a set of Tech Sights on it and you can explode pop cans at 75 meters as long as you can paint them bright enough to see them!

I had a 597 that was the most unreliable jamomatic 22lr semi I have ever owned and I have owned about 10 or so. I replaced it with a Marlin 795 and for 200$ it is one hell of a deal and a fantastic shooter as well. However the aftermarket for the 795 is very limited...not sure why as they are cheap, have been around forever and work very very well.

552 speedmaster, high cap tube mag will even hold and cycle shorts, 25 of them!
It's a really neat rifle I wish I would not have let go of mine. Now I have 2 1022's and a half dozen 10 round mags .
I'm still pretty damn happy

I picked up my STG44 today after many weeks of being on the fence
Will get to try it out tomorrow
If you're a history buff, maybe this might interest you

To the OP, you have asked a fairly vague question. there are so many good choices in 22 semis. All sorts of models have been produced for over 100 years. Remington, Browning, Winchester, etc each have produced millions in many variations, and they are floating around the used market. All had their pros and cons, most were pretty good.
Here are a few that I like in the used market
(X means i have not shot this model, but is has a great reputation):
* cz 511 (older with wood & steel) or 511 (newer, more plastic) X
* brno 581 (an even older version of the cz above) X
* Norinco jw-20 (light, great trigger, accurate, sometimes need tuning)
* Browning SA-22 (jw-20 is a chinese knock off of this, but it goes for well over $500 new) X
* Mossberg 151
* Remington nylon 66 (creepy triggers, but very light and accurate, esp with open sights)
* Browning buckmark X
* Thompson Center (TC) R55 X

The bargains in the group above are the norinco and the mossberg, both can be had for around $200 give or take. Both are very accurate.

There are only a few guns I would definitely avoid in your place: the cooey/savage 64, remington 597, later model mossbergs made in the 70's or after. That's just my opinion, you will find some who have had better luck with these and like them.

Before anyone can really help, you need define what this 22 semi will be used for and list what is important to you and what isn't, for example:

new or used
trigger feel and pull weight
accuracy needed
ease of cleaning
importance of light weight
tube or magazine fed
magazine capacity
scoped, peep sights or open sights
plastic stock or wood or laminate stock
stainless or blued steel action

If I was looking for something different, I'd like to give the Baikal 161 a try. Handled one at a show, struck a chord with me.

I considered one, but since I shoot open sights, the short sight radius was the only thing that did not appeal to me. If I was going to scope it, it would have been the one. I ended up buying a Norinco Bolt action with 24" barrel for two reasons; it fit me best of all the .22s under $400.00 and with a 24" barrel, had that long sight radius that I was looking for.

Of the Semis, while it did not fit me all that good, I really like the Marlin 795 (Cabelas have it on for $219.00) I also like the Marlin model 60 with the tubular magazine (I have two other .22s with tubes and they feed amazingly well) Mossburg makes a great .22s , and a lot of guys at my club have them as well, they are around the $200.00 markl. Lots of choice, find one that fits, that you like the look of, and shoot the hell out of it!

I have a few 22lr's

-~$500 10/22 takedown which you don't want (mags ~$35)
-~$435 Swiss Arms 1911 (made by GSG) with fake supressor and 4 mags, such a nice inexpensive pistol, Recommended Highly! (mags ~$45)
- ~$235 JW25A, came with mangled front sights that I fixed Now it shoots very nicely with whatever ammo you put in it, Recommended (check rifle thoroughly b4 cleaning it of grease if new) takes CZ mags or so I hear.
- ~$499 GSG-15, this rifle looks awesome. Large magazine capacity, can use AR equip on included rails, slightly cheaper than STG44 and easier to mount stuff, Highly Recommended (mags~$49)

Order a GSG 15 or STG44 you will have fun with both, I chose the GSG 15 over the STG44 due to the AR15 style which would make it a good trainer is I ever buy a AR15. Its doubtful I will ever own a real MP44 and its greater difficulty to modify drove me to the GSG 15. These two rifles essentially cost the same with the GSG 15 slightly cheaper at some retailers for now.

Savage 6 / Stevens 87. Any of the letter variants, like 6A, 87D, etc.

All metal actions, long and heavy barrels, really cool action operation, loads of vintage character, lots of "what is that" comments at the range.

Only have one semi .22 and its a GSG STG44. Its cool and a blast to shoot. Always loved the German machine gun and now I can own one....

Winchester Model 490 rifle. Discontinued rifle once made right here, in Cobourg Ontario.Mostly all steel & a walnut stock. Man sized portions. IMHO, a tad bit more accurate than the stock grade 10-22. Nice trigger too, easy to scope & parts are still available from well stocked suppliers. And no offence to the black rifle crowd fellas, but this rifle resembles the average deer rifle. A good check mark if you wish to pass it on as a family heirloom in Canada.

I was on the fence for months between the GSG 15 and STG 44. Had a chance to handle both, was leaning towards GSG 15 until I saw a poster complaining of breaking the plastic folding hinge asssembly. As I wanted a longterm ownership gun (it's for my son) I went with the much more robust STG 44. It does weigh way more but I know it will not be prone to any breakage in colder weather use.

Whenever I shoot the STG 44, I get lots of questions which I am happy to answer. I don't get many questions about my AR style guns as they are everywhere, something about the metal and wood stock draw questions. I have a K98 leather sling and am waiting on a HK scope mount for a compact scope, eyes are crappy but my kid loves the super fine front post of the irons.

They really did a great job with this replica.

Some complain the magazine is too much money but it is well designed.

My biggest complaint is why cannot other gunmakers also offer a lifetime warranty like GSG does on these rifles?

Anyways, whether you chose the GSG 15 or the STG 44 both are awesome guns, just comes down to what works for you personally.

I'm am continually surprised that the CZ 512 is not more popular than it is. In this case specifically, the CZ 522 Tactical.

CZ quality, accuracy and reliability wrapped up in a tacticool package and comes with a 25 round magazine.

It is a little more expensive than what you were hoping to spend, but worth it in the long run, IMO. It won't let you down and you won't be tired of it in a few months because it looks cool but isn't as fun to shoot as you had hoped.... ;)
