Forgive my noobness but what are everyone's opinions on a good all purpose semi auto hunting rifle. What do u recommend and why. So far I like the browning BAR longtrac oil finish. 7mm rem mag or 300 win mag
The BAR MK II Safaris are highly regarded.
I had one in 30.06 and it was a pretty rifle but heavy and the rifle was one of the earlier ones with the crappy mag release if I remember. Traded it for a heavier Garand which I still have no mag release just has that annoying BING!!!
.... but I don't know about the calibre choices. Might you not be better served with a non-magnum load? You don't need really need a magnum, except in extremely accurate long range - and a bolt action would serve you better in that category. I always pictured semi-autos as a brush gun. You don't really need to shoot past 400 yards, and what better way to utilize the gentler semi-auto action with a 'softer' round for follow-ups. Myself, I just hunt with a 6.5 swede for everything non grr-bear/bison. Placement is everything afterall...
M14 if you're cheap. I've hunted with a M14 nearly every year I've gone out.
