Semi auto hunting rifle

Forgive my noobness but what are everyone's opinions on a good all purpose semi auto hunting rifle. What do u recommend and why. So far I like the browning BAR longtrac oil finish. 7mm rem mag or 300 win mag
 
I own a Voere 2185 semi-auto in 30-06.
I would warn prospective buyers that this rifle has a short throat and most likely a match tolerance chamber. Which is a PITA for a general use hunting rifle. As of now it shoots 125s/150s great, but it is a terrible rifle for heavier bullets! That kind of sucks for a 30-06 rifle IMO.
Has an externally adjustable trigger (nice) but the barrel heats up super fast after 3 quick shots that tend to stay MOA @100-150 yards for these three anyways. (this is fair enough)

I literally don't know if I would personally endorse this rifle or not, to anyone else.
This one was purchased at a very considerable discount by me.
 
Pretty gun. I only have a .308 remington, but I don't know about the calibre choices. Might you not be better served with a non-magnum load? You don't need really need a magnum, except in extremely accurate long range - and a bolt action would serve you better in that category. I always pictured semi-autos as a brush gun. You don't really need to shoot past 400 yards, and what better way to utilize the gentler semi-auto action with a 'softer' round for follow-ups. Myself, I just hunt with a 6.5 swede for everything non grr-bear/bison. Placement is everything afterall.

I owned 2 Browning BAR's, Safari MKII in .30-06.. Beautiful rifle's, (Probably the most classic in terms of any semi-auto). One was a safe queen, never fired, can't comment on that one besides it's looks, the other, also a .30-06 was very accurate, handled well, a little heavier than I'd normally like to carry.. Great bush gun though, mine had open sights, I wanted it for that reason..close shooting in heavy timber. The only semi-auto centerfire i've owned. So, can't comment on any other makes. I'm a Browning fan, so..my vote goes for browning. You'll be please with the long trac
 
I bought a Benelli R1 for a buddy in Regina. I shot it a bit with him and have to say it's by far the nicest of the semi auto "non-black rifle" style rifles I have shot, and I've shot the Browning and the Remingtons. I myself have an XCR-M and love it! But it's a bit heavier. I will say that that R1 in .300 Win Mag kicked about the same as my XCR-M... so it's no slouch in the recoil reduction department. Anyway, yeah, 100% on the R1 from me if you're looking for "old world styling". XCR if you are OK with the black rifle look.

If you can find a used Heckler and Koch 770 you'll be a happy man. Of course, they're a ferocious price, but they're one of the best, if not the best semi auto hunting rifle.

I don't have any experience with the long tracs but lots with the short tracs and Safari models. They have been accurate and reliable. I would suggest you have a look at the WSM in the Short Tracs. Lighter and shorter than the regular magnums with very similar performance.

The Benelli has great reviews as well, but they have the cross-bolt safety at the front of the trigger guard and I really prefer it at the rear, same as the rem pumps.

I agree with this... when all is said and done you would be well served with a Short Trac (Oil finish if you like) in a short action caliber (.308 IMO)... if you just gotta do a magnum, the Short Trac in .300 WSM is a good way to go. IMO, you will shoot and enjoy the .308 much more... it will be cheaper upfront and in the long run and you will never want to get rid of it.... or second guess your purchase, which is often the case with a magnum caliber... was you get pounded at the range. (although the BAR comes with less recoil than some others)

I have 2 BAR's ,7mmRem Mag & 30-06,the 30-06 shoots awesome with my reloads but could not find a factory load I was happy with and it only likes 130gr & 150 gr bullets. The 7mm is a good shooter to and shoots flatter but not as tight of groups as the 30-06. Only problem I have had with the both of them is that you have to use a medium burn powder in them or they don't cycle properly.
IMO you can't go wrong with a Browning . Very happy with both of mine.

The only thing I dislike about the M14 is the really loud clatter of chambering a round when you see game. On a nice cool, still morning, it really announces "I'm here...over here!" That's not to say, that I don't use mine in the bush either. Like you, it accompanies me on most of my outings. :D

Mind you I was not too happy with my BAR and that goofy mag setup - grouping was average and just too pretty to be in the bush.
