Has anyone ever heard of such a beast? They seems like rather crude items, does any factory in the world still produce PPSH or PPS43's? I've looked at then on display at the Calgary Museum of the Regiments (PPSh and PPD-40, and I'd love one. If they can make a PPS43 in a bicycle factory under siege, surely somewhere must produce them today?

Alternatively, if some ambitious entrepreneur with loads of machining experience out there was to produce a semi-auto-only version, would it be non-restricted?

There already was a company in the US (1990's?) that made a conversion kit to semi-auto only with a striker fired firing pin; and a long barrel. This is probably defunct as the BATFE rulings recently would disallow such a design. I don't remember the company name sorry(I guess I'm not that much of a help).:(

Biggest problem is reliability

these are all striker fired and the strike jams BIG time

other problem is the reciever it MUST be 100% new otherwise the rcmp say its converted auto FA parts IE orig firecontrol and bolt CANNOT fit
the guns must also have a 16" barrel NOT the orig 10" or they will NOT be approved by the U.S for export the orig trunion must also not be present the new one must be a different size then the orig (atf rules)

there are a few semi autos but ha ve problems with out of battery fireing and stove pipes every shot and ruputured cases

the reciever on this gun is the entire top half encluding the barrel shroud

all those american companies were supposed to deliver those guns in October of LAST year VERY few have been delievered the gun seems to be hard to make safely and reliable is semi auto only with the mads needed to make it legal non NFA weapon

you mean jusdt like the original ones. except for the stove pipes.

yup but atf says it MUST be a closed bolt NOT open like the orig

and the out of battery fireing has resulted in shrapenal bolt dammage and minor injuries

this is why they are not available yet they have to work out all the bugs

biggest problem is the ppsh was handmade/fitted

you cannot take a part from one and put it in another and expect it to work with out fitting it

now try building these in semi with hundres of kits and keeping all the #'s matched....

guys i spoke too have seen bolt to chamber hight differences of up to .40 thou depending on what bolt you use/get

In Canada they'd be allowed to fire from open bolt though, right?

Yes, but they would have to not easily be made to fire full auto which is difficult with a open bolt gun. The open bolt principles lends itself to easy full auto firing, which of course is illegal.
There are very few open bolt semi autos that aren't prohibited in Canada.

I've never seen an open bolt semi. Can you think of any on the Canadian Market?

It wouldn't be exactly the same but you could probably make a really cool lookalike with a 10/22. Probably a hellovalot easier than that Tompson project. + you can get those big 50rnd .22lr drum mags :D Something like that I think would be mostly about funfactor. You could have much more fun with .22lr.

I had an uncle in my misspent youth that had a semi .22 that fired from open bolt. It was an inexpensive European rifle with a big knob of a barrel weight integral to the muzzle. When it was dirty enough, it'd go FA all by itself. ROF was amazing, so a 10 shot mag was good for a very brief "urp" sound.

Or so I'm told. Yeah. Plausable deniability.

Here's one

I've seen the Kommandos for sale a few times on the Exchange forum. Apparently, they have all the quality features indicative of having been made in someones South Afrikan garage.
Here is another (restricted) semi auto open bolt available here in Canada:

The sterling is considered to be the rolls royce of the tube guns. They were even available in gold plated versions.

Norinco sold a semi-auto think that looked like a PPSh for years, I don't think it was a version of the military FA one. Also, it was available in more than 1 caliber.
