Semi Auto vs Pump?

If that’s the only choice I’d go semi, I prefer my semi over my pump but I prefer my single shots over both, I started out with my grandfathers Stevens goose gun and I mostly use a cooey single 12ga for bigger birds and a 410 single for grouse and rabbit

I prefer having a pump shotgun (Mossberg 500) or it's budget friendly brother the Maverick 88 it's all you really need. With more expensive shotguns you will be worried about scratching the finish etc. Not with either of these brands they can take a beating and keep pumping. Notice I didn't mention the Remington 870? lately they been nothing but junk unless you can find a 60's - 70's wingmaster.

Take a look at the latest Wingmasters. They are every bit as nice as the older ones. What's not nice is the price: $1349.00

As others have said, that's a personal choice. For shotguns especially, the way it fits you and lines up from your shoulder to the front bead is so important.

A couple things to think about:

1)How does the gun "feel" for you? Does it feel natural on your shoulder or are you craning your neck to get a good sight picture?

2)Semi-autos (particularly cheaper ones) are prone to feeding issues if you use cheap ammo or if they're not maintained properly, especially in wet or cold weather - what kind of weather do you hunt in? Wet, dry, dirty, good ammo, $hitty ammo, whatever - a pump will keep on cycling and shooting forever. Plus the pump is less expensive to buy. A good new one or a really good used one can be had for a few hundred dollars less than a semi of equivalent quality.

3)Have you considered an O/U or SxS? Either of these, if you have the cash to buy a good one, will most likely suit all of your needs, feel and point better, last longer without needing parts or maintenance, clean up easier, and generally be more enjoyable in the field. They're light and fast, and classy (lol). I do concede though, that they're not always the best choice for waterfowl or turkey hunting, but for chickens and rabbits, they're just right.

Lastly, you mentioned duck hunting - make sure whatever you buy is suitable for non-toxic shot. Noticing a bulged-out barrel that was running steel through a barrel/choke that's not meant for it can really ruin your day.

Single-shots are a good thing to start with, but when you're grouse hunting, you'll be glad for that quick follow-up shot when you miss or when there's another one that pops up out of the high grass and you didn't realize it was there.

Another vote in the pump camp. They're incredibly versatile guns and you have the option of many different barrel lengths. A good 870 an da couple of barrels and you're good to go for any type of hunting or shooting you want. From there you can branch out into other action types if you want, but none will match the versatility and reliability of a Remington 870.

When you say "bigger birds" do you mean geese? My Cooey is full choke, and the cost of non-lead / non-steel shot just doesn't make sense for me. But for anything not waterfowl I love my Cooey.

Hey everyone, I'm looking to buy my first shotgun for hunting small game(rabbit, duck, partridge, turkey).
I wanted to know what would be better as far as semi auto vs pump? And any recommendations?

Well I've never owned a semi shotgun but I'm a dyed in wool pump shotgun guy . I'd say a semi will let you down before a good pump will . what's your budget ? also you have to shoulder what your thinking of buying . see how it comes up to your shoulder and when you go to sight down the barrel how does it point and feel . that's very important . try to find someone who will let you shoot a semi and a pump . but make sure it points well for you and feels comfortable to shoulder. go for 12 gauge also .

Strictly from a recoil management the semi is a bit easier on the shoulder. I prefer a pump but that just my personal preference.

Recoil is not an issue when hunting small game. At the skeet range is a different story.

I like pumps better, mostly because of familiarity and reliability. I used 870 12ga for years waterfowling but moved to upland hunting and that with a SxS.

I like the BPS pumps as well with the bottom eject and tang safety which aligns with my SxSs.

Have you handled a current issue Wingmaster? I have not even seen one.

I have a 25yr old 870 Special Purpose in 12ga with 26" bbls. Not sure I would trade that for two new ones.

Get a vintage Ithaca 37. They are great guns and go cheap because they are 2-3/4" and pre date steel shot.

Still got that 870SP ?

Yes, I handled a recent production Wingmaster at an Ontario gun store. I've owned several Wingmasters and currently have one made in the early 90's Wingmaster. The new ones are impressive.

bps are the best but cleaning the trigger group is no fun and also the alloy for the barrel vent is really weak in my opinion.

Yes, but doesn't get used much these days as I don't hunt ducks anymore. Might have to start using it again for our new spring turkey hunt.

I upgraded the tupperware with police walnut. IMO, the Special Purpose was the best of the Wingmasters.

That's good to hear. I hope Big Green gets back on track for the long haul.

I have used both but a quality 12 gauge 2 & 3/4 - 3 inch semi would be my choice and will last for many years if the "Turd" doesn't outlaw it.

I'm still using a pump. Since waterfowl hunting is capped at 3 rounds I see no reason I need a semi auto. I can pump my pump action fast enough that the speed factor on a semi is worthless to me. I can reload a semi as fast as I can a pump. Now would I enjoy less recoil on the semi yes. But I'm not paying a premium for that. I like browning BPS's, they used to be under $1000 but are now going for around $1100 for new imports. A browning Silver is like $1500. That's $400 more.
