Anyone have a Winchester Model 50?

What makes my buddy's jam on the third shot all the time?

I inherited a Model 50 from my grandpa last year. I think it was bought in 1959.

Anyway, it used to jam like crazy with anything less than 1-1/4 ounce magnum loads. After the first shot, it woulld not fully eject shells or if it did, it didn't properly load a new one.

Not sure what was causing it, but I put about 300 rounds through it in a month and that loosened it up (it had been sitting for about 20 years before I got it) and then I completely disassembled it, oiled up everything and cleaned her out real good.

Is anything broken/loose possibly? I had a problem with the fitting of the butt to the receiver at one point and this caused some fail to feed as well.

You mentioned it always jams on the 3rd shot? Is the mag spring possibly worn out? Maybe he can put a few slices of wood at the front of the mag to act as spacers and give the spring some more compression.

I bought a model 50 brand new back in the 50's -57 Ithink .It worked properly every time for me. I didn't like how it threw up to my shoulder and never shot that well with it. A few years ago I transferred it to my son who had the barrel shortened and rebored. It is one beautiful gun--smooth action, solid and doesn't sound like a can of marbles if you give it a little shake-like most of today's guns do. I think that I paid $175 for it.

Model 50's can develop timing issues with age and dirt. With the action locked open push the bolt handle until it bottoms out. (no further rearward movement) if that travel is more than a couple of 32s of an inch the timing needs adjustment. I can describe how to do it but it wouldn't make any sense without you me and the gun being together. Jamming on the third shot could be a mag spring issue. Remove it and stretch it out an inch or so. Have your smith order you a new buffer spring, mag spring and set the timing. These old guns are good quality but lets remember they are not the youngest girl at the dance anymore.

cheers Darryl
