I don't want to chase brass all over the country, and I want a good trigger - both issues are problematic with an auto. Pounder had a custom BAR built in .458 which was interesting, but a .458 bolt gun that weighed that much wouldn't kick either. I wonder where that rifle is now?

I am all twitchy for a new Benelli R1... maybe in 300WSM... or if they come out with a .325WSM 8)
Nothing wrong with Semis... but they have to function... I had a couple of M-100's and a 742 on the range for sight-ins yesterday.... none of them would cycle... very accurate single shots  .... but I wish guys would service and maintain thier rifles

That is the crux of the matter. Lack of maintenance.

If you clean them, they will work.

RePete.

Sounds weird REDD but of the 4 M-100 wins I've had only one would cycle reliably off a set of bags :? , Free-hand you could run clip after clip thru them, but off the bags :?

I know what your talking about Senior and have witnessed that phenomenum before.
But we use a "lead sled" for all our sight-ins now it hold the rifle very firmly... which stops any soft-cycling problems.
No these rifles were just poorly maintained... hunters who pay to have thier rifles sighted in by someone else usually don't even know how to clean or maintain thier firearm

I'll be taking my M305 hunting this year. I finally got a good load worked up for it and I know it has no cycling problems since I haven't had a problem in 400-500 rounds.

I also use levers and bolts but one of my levers crapped out on me this year so it'll have to wait for repair.

Semi shotgun - Berreta Extrema 12 ga for birds, slugs for deer

Semi rifle - HKSL8 .223 coyotes, groundhogs

Bolt rifle - Savage .308 for bigger game

Ok, lets see how we stand on this, just for Dosing's poll list
:p

Best possible action choice. The only other comparison is the double barrel, or multiple barrels if you want to go that way (7 barrel volley gun perhaps :p )
In truth, they are the best out there, with the exception of a good double.

The only downside is that there are a few crappy models (Helllllllllllllllo 742), and alot of truely ####ty owners. Regrettably it has been my experience that most semi owners are lazy when it comes to maintenance, and neglect thier rifles. Thus you end up with jam-O-matics, failure to feeds, fires and ejects etc.
If people maintained thier semis properly, they are the way to go....

If it ever happened that I needed a rapid follow up shot (unlikely for the hunting I do), I'd like to know for an absolute fact that the gun will work as advertised with all loads. Bolt or lever for me, thanks.

yeah but what if you were attacked by a bear, and it was chewing on one arm, and you needed a second shot?????
