Hi all I have an old winchester 77 semi. I took it apart to clean it and when cleaned up it looked like new inside. Now It works but does not spit out the brass (brass gets caught as the action closes). Can anyone tell me what I might have missed before I go in and take her apart again? Thanks all!!!:)

Wheres the ejector? is it not installed or broken?

This is a semi, right? So its blowback by design, no extractor required. Its only used to eject live/unfired rounds.

Give the bolt, bolt raceways and chamber an additional cleaning and then lightly relubricate. Check that the recoil return spring is clean and properly seated.

Try higher velocity ammo. If there is not enough backpressure the bolt won't cycle all the way back.

Try CCI mini-mags. It solved my problems with ejection related jams.

Why do all semi's come with extractors then?...................try mini-mags and I bet you'll see a big difference.

To extract live rounds. And it isn't like that with all semi's....just blowback operated oners. I've seen Sterling SMG's work well without an extractor as well....9mm blowback.....you aren't confusing extractors with ejectors are you?

Im not sure about a model 77, but often firearms have an ejector as well as an extractor to flip the empth cases out sideways. This can be either a fixed type that hits the left side of the shell head, at the back of the bolt cycle or on some guns it is a spring loaded plunger. Check the cycle by working the action be hand and see if you can notice any problems.

I think it would be a reliability thing,to keep the case in-line with the bolt so it always goes strait back...22 casings have a pretty small face (relative to the neck)so it needs to hit that extractor just right
