Hi fellas,
I am looking to get some inside info and experience about semi rifle. I want to get .308 maybe 30-06. I understand a lot of you prefer bolt action, but I have a desire to get semi.Budget is $1000. My old man have Browning. However, maybe you guys can tell me what else there is good?

The Browning is a great semi-auto. Might be tough to find under $1000 though, it seems to retail a little higher than that. Very nice wood and fit-and-finish on the new models, the checkering and lines might be a bit of an acquired taste. Winchester makes one too which is a bit cheaper but same action/internals as the Browning.

How about a win. 100?? They sell in good shape for around $450-500 from what I've seen, my uncle has one, shoots ok with factory ammo for hunting needs it'll do just fine.

I have a Benelli R1 30-06 and it is awesome. It is, however, more than $1000. I have seen demo models and used ones for sale for $1100-1200, so maybe you could make the stretch. I use mine white tail hunting in the Prairies and it works great all the time no matter what the conditions are. We do a lot of Pushes so you walk for an hour in -30 and then get into a warm truck for 10 minutes. After a few rounds of this the guns get pretty frosty but the Benelli always works. The other guys have Brownings (and I used to have a Browning, but wanted a detachable magazine), which also work good, but they have problems with the clips. The hinged floor plate that the clip attatches to get frozen shut and won't open properly sometimes. As far as shooting goes, they always shoot. The one Remington in the group is an old model 4 and it has been good, but has only had one weeks experience out there with mild weather.
The new winchester looks OK too and its priced around 750-$800. I haven't seen one in action yet though.

Anyways, good luck with your decision.

Thnx for your responses guys.
To Gerich:
About Browning - that exactly what my old man has issues with. Benelli R1 - a very nice piece. Do you use specific ammunition? Maybe any specific matters, maybe minor ones?

Where are you seeing the new Winchester (SXR?) for $750-800? I only found it for $1000 (I didn't look too far though).

Edit: I found them for 800 at one location, but it was a sale price and they only had two of the available calibers in stock.

We've sold a few of the merkel SR1's in both 30/06 and 9.3X62. Everything reported has been postive, so far, but they are around $1200. (About $2000 for the 9.3's, 30/06 is on distrbutor sale)

Thnx, but I am into hunting, not into Tac stuff. Plus M14 is not my favorite rifle, better off with HK if I would invest.
Hey, I hunt with an M14! You'd be surprised how precise they can be made for a value priced semi. Besides, you don't have to put rails and synthetic stocks on it just because you're spending money :)

I recommend the M14. It doesn't take much to make them good shooters. Put it in a walnut stock if you don't want the "tactical" look.

Avoid Remingtons like the plague!

The "hunting" style semis just don't appeal to me. While I like black rifles and handguns, my taste in hunting type rifles is pretty conservative.

My advice is to save a bit more money and go with the Benelli R1.

I have one in 300 Win Mag and the accuracy, handling and performance is incredible.
And they are not kidding about the reduced recoil. :)

Also I find it the easiest to clean out of all the semis I own.

In hind sight the .308 would be better suited for me for our small Island Deer, but the overall system is flawless IMHO.

And yes they are holding their value.
So a used one would probably keep you happy for a long time.

There was a guy posted a few days ago with a bear that he had taken with his norc m14. I also have a huntin buddy who uses his m14 for hunting. Has taken a couple of moose in the past few years. Added some aftermarket improvements and made a great shooter without the pimped out tactical look.

interesting about M14 and bear. I use shotgun and slugs for this kinda game. Will check will check on that. Benelli R1 is nice, will look for one if possible to get used. regarding HK770 as well to good to know price on this one

RE Benelli R1

I grew up shooting Remington 7OO's, so when I first shot my Benelli I was a little worried about accuracy. I tried some different brands of ammo and the groups tightened up. I was always trying the 150's in 30-06. Some ammos were definately much better. I have now reloaded for it and it shoots really good with Horanady SST bullets. The best factory bullets were by far the Hornady 165 SST Light Mags. They were touching, but now they are hard to find in Canada. The best 150's for mine are the cheap Winchester Silvertips. If you have any more questions, let me know.
