Sending a gun to the USA for work.

It requires permits from both governments. In Canada, Global Affairs is one of the entities that you'll need to deal with (along with the CFP). In the USA, you might be dealing with the Dept. of State, the Dept. of Commerce, or the Dept. of Justice, depending upon the firearm. The easiest way to do this is to pay someone - like Borderview <http://www.borderview.com/> - to do the job for you.

Well I bought a m16a1 parts kit yrs ago and am close to wanting it put together.
I want it totally refinished with an original colt finish, so like new & US Anodising does this restoration.
I have talked to a few people in Canada and when I tell them what I want they try to talk me into armour coat / parking / newer versions of finishes... It just won't be the same as the original Colt grey..... or they say, yes, we can try it. They haven't done it before. It's a pita.....
US Anodizing refinishes AR15s all the time and thus they should be able to get it right.....
I don't want to spend a bunch of money and not be happy.... for a few bucks extra and some leg work I can be happy with my rifle.

It is no small expense to do what you want (the US seriously needs to lighten up on this kind of stuff...) Here is a quote from Guns Abroad/Borderview "We do have a 'Temporary Import (to USA) for Repair' service, if you work it out with Lilja then you can fill out the form on the linked page and we can proceed with sending it back for warranty work. Making me get a stack of permits to import a hunting scope or send a rifle to a USA gunsmith & return for modifications/repairs is not stopping terrorists like al quaida backed by oil rich countries with international connections from getting whatever weapons short of nukes they want.
Heck, our government just handed Khadr enough money to buy a tank.
If the cpc ever gets in again we should ask them to negotiate canada an itar exemption. Apparently bush jr offered it and then liberal minister axworthy declined.
Yeah, but then you have to travel to the US with the gun to get the work done. I did this once to have a gun refinished by Simmons. It isn't the same as mailing it down for the work to be done. That temp import stuff is complicated and requires the paperwork to be completed on the US end too. They won't bother because it isn't worth the headache for them.
My understanding is the Form 6NIA does not allow you to leave the gun in the U.S.A. You must stay until the work is completed.

If im not incorrect, the reason the color is grey is because it is only hard anodized and not hard anodized and dyed black.
Dyeing after hard anodizing is not very common outside of firearms, so pretty much any anodizing shop should be able to get you that grey colour.....
My advice: get yourself a cheap norc lower, sand blast it bare, and have it hard anodized (no dye). If it turns out the color you want, have the colt done
