After looking at a lot of threads - is it safe to say that ist pretty much impossible to send a gun down for work/upgrades & return to Canada?

not impossible but a serious pain. I would seek out one of the many gunsmiths in Canada for the work. There are plenty to choose from...

Good luck.

my dad sent a S&W pistol down...not a problem for him

I am assuming it was done legally.

Get your dad to post the steps and describe the paperwork and how long it took and the costs...

My guess is about 2 months and up to get the paperwork required before shipping...

Of course it was legal...wtf would I talk about/suggest illegal stuff :slap:

It took about 2 months.

His smith helped with the forms.

It went directly to S&W as it needed a new brl.

It ws a prohib but was reborn as a restricted.

Now explaing to the CFC that S&W has the prohib brl is a whole other can 'o' worms

It is a huge pain in the ass. I have been trying to send a rifle to the US for over a year now, I have all the correct paperwork from the ATF, but yet cannot export it. I spoke the both the people in charge at the Embassy in Ottawa from CBS and ATF and they told me the only way was to have an FFL come over the border and pick it up. Mark from Questar is very knowlegable on this. He has it posted on his site about export into the US. Talk to one of th several good smiths we have up here.
