September Purchase

My contribution for the month isn't a gun, but rather some leather.
I've been searching for this canteen holder since at least Sept 2000, yup, 12 years.. Thanks go to QM. It's part of the Canadian Pattern 1916 leather field gear. It has the brass clips to attach to the belt or leather hangers that drop from the belt. Some parts of this set are plentiful, other stuff is extremely rare.
I'm still looking for the elusive yoke, or "Y" strap. I guess that's part of the fun, is the hunt.
There was a guy in the US that made a repro Y strap that looked really good, I just have to track him down while still searching boxes and bins at gun and antique shows for an original.
Every part of this set is C/|\ marked.

Perfectly done....Nice one..Looks great..!!

I'm probably closing this month because CGN is closed for the weekend for a major update so... here it is

I was looking for a K98 for months without any luck and suddenly BOOM! 2 in the same week!!! LOCAL buy!!!

The top one is a 1945 K98 Israeli Mauser in .308"Win caliber. Bolt matchs the receiver. German and Israeli acceptance marks are present. The rifle was made at the Brno arsenal (SWP). Bore sooooooo shiny!!! Scout mounted scope so I can put the original sight back anytime (somewhere after hunting season...)

The bottom one is a 1943 Russian Capture made by Sauer and Sohn in 8mm Mauser. Bolt electro-penciled to match. Eagles and waffenampts everywhere. Beautiful bore. Bayonet with scabbard and leather frog in overall very good condition. Very happy with that one too.

What a nice way to close the month! (IMO)

Well I'm going to sneak my two purchases into here before the end even though I started my own thread about them.
1909 Peruvian all matching in very nice condition and a nice hard to find Syrian Mauser.

Not a firearm, but definitely milsurp. I made some really good additions to my WW2 cap badge collection.

Left to right - Prince Edward Island Light Horse, which served as the defense company to 2nd Canadian Corps. A very rare badge. New Brunswick Rangers, which provided the support company to the 10th Canadian Infantry Brigade, 4th Canadian Armored Division, also very rare. The Regiment de la Chaudiere, which landed on D-Day with the 8th Canadian Infantry Brigade, 3rd Canadian Infantry Division. Finally the Algonquin Regiment, which also served with 10th Canadian Infantry Brigade, 4th Canadian Armored Division. The last two aren't rare, merely a little uncommon, but still filled some big gaps in my collection!

Correct on both counts. I actually often find WW2 badges in very nice shape - Canadian badges were made of yellow brass instead of the gilding metal used in British ones and it seems to keep its color better.

Having a photo is cool, as there are not that many around.

It would be good if you could post it, or if I could obtain a copy, that would be great.

Heres a scan of the photo. It is a picture of my great grandfather 117 C.E.F taken in 1916.

Long Branch Drill rifle

While I would never want to deactivate a perfectly functional rifle, I bought this deactivated Long Branch barrelled action in September, then assembled it into a full Drill Purpose rifle. The action looks like new, curiously it never had a serial number- receiver, barrel and bolt all have DP stamps but no serial number, and no sign it was ever stamped! I assembled it back into a beech furniture set, but hope to find a full dark walnut set to make it complete in it's Long Branch appearance. Still have to strip and refinish the magazine, but other than the fact the chamber is cross drilled and plugged, and the bolt head and firing pin have been ground down, it is in near excellent condition!

Great looking Canadian War Assets stamp. For a dewat, it looks nice.

Yes, it would appear that maybe it was factory deactivated and never had a serial number. If only it could talk.. was in a museum at one time. Not sure of prior history or how long in the museum. The magazine was serialized and used, I may refinish it in a flat black paint and rub it down to give a semi-gloss finish.
