Hey guys,

Does anyone know the route to take on finding out the history of a serial number off a Winchester? My buddy's grandfather just past and left him a Winchester 1873, octagon barrel, .38, he told him it was a civil war officers side saddle arm.

Any ideas on how to find its history? value?

do a google search for winchester history or winchester serial numbers and you will find a site that will give you the date.
The second answer is that the original owner may have been an officer in the recent unpleasantness south of the border but the war ended 8 years before the model 73 was patented.

Well i tracked the serial number down anyway. Its apparently a Second Model - #73687. If Winchester wasn't going through all their turmoil maybe they would respond to my emails! haha. Any idea on a value?

The old Winchester sales records have been at the Cody Museum in Wyoming for many years now. For a fee they will look them up and provide a letter, usually only tell you who bought the rifle in the first place, like Joe's Trading Post in Hollow Log, Tennesse in 1879 (that type of info).

Serial # Search
Will not give any info as to owners. Colt will but Winchester does not have the info.
Only records on these serials are available
