Serial number restoration

I've got an M1917 Enfield, and after numerous refinishings, the serial number is starting to get a might tough to read. Would I be better-off just restamping the number on a diffeent location on the action, rather than risk "defacing" the original numbers? Or is it even permissable?

I would go ahead and stamp the number somewhere else on the action... and not worry about it...

The person polishing and removing the number isn't supposed to ... but who is going to tell. It isn't like anyone is trying to hide anything.

That's good, because I also have a Cogswell and Harrison sporterized M98, with the serial number stamped only on the barrel, not the action.

It's not so much that the number is being removed, it's that I believe it was unevenly stamped to start with, the first 2 characters are still sharp and deep, but the last 2 are pretty shallow and faint.

Anyway, thanx for the opinion, I think the stamping elsewhere is the way I'll go.

It turns out, from a similar experience to yours, that isn't unusual. The serial number on the barrel is correct and acceptable, unless you are planning on haveing it rebarreled. bearhunter

my enfield sporter doenst have a serial stamped anywhere in any of the metal *not even on the bolt handle* so the CFC sent me this ugly little sticker to put on it LOL
