serial number tracking (No4Mk1/2)

There are a few writers whose books attempt to record serial numbers and makers ranges. Stratton and Skennerton come to mind.

But unit records were never intended as permanent documents. As many reservists on this forum will remember, a line formed outside QM, the guy at the counter wrote the soldier's name on a big yellow gridded sheet, wrote a serial number someone called, then ruled out the rest of the boxes and barked, 'Sign!'. That soldier then had his personal weapon for the exercise. When all the kit was back after the exercise or occassion, the sheet was destroyed. No need to keep a lingering liability or obligation once its purpose had been served.
