So that lowlifes can't use the serial number to sell a gun they don't own.

They can't sell it. " the lowlifes " But they can use the serial number to make a buyer think they have the gun and get the buyer to send money. Having no intention of ever delivering.
Same reason you didn't use your real name as your CGN handle. because it's the freaking internet.
Theoretically the serial number can be used to identify the person, via the firearms registry. Show your ser #, identify yourself and your CGN identity to the 50,000 or so people who have access to the registry records.
I have no idea if it's a valid concern or not. Do whatever you like and don't worry about what other people do.

It's scary to me that so many can't instinctively see the risks...and lots of them...in posting information on the internet. It scares me even more when people don't care about protecting their privacy or trust people they don't know with their personal information.

That's only after you've made personal contact and are comfortable about it. It's different than the anonymous net where anybody can get a crack at it. That, plus the mail doesn't give away its contents (and if you think it has been compromised, you know where to look).

What about the people you ship parcels to with your return address on them?
Naturally. Because no one would recognize the dual-band mobile antenna and follow you to your house under the 68' tower w/ tri-band beam and reverse-lookup your address.
