Serial numbers of original winchesters

Does anybody know what the reason behind the "letters" in the serial numbers of old winchesters ie.153###B? What does the letter "B" mean? What does other "letters" mean?The 1873 winchester had "letters" in its serial numbers.

153### would have been built in 1884, likely in March.

Old girl has her birthday this month: she is 129!

What does the letter "B" mean?

The "B" is a production line change. It is not really part of the serial and if you letter the gun the B will not show up in the serial
