Serial numbers

It seems there is a reluctance to show or post full serial numbers of firearms be it Long guns , Pistols , or Revolvers
I think I may have posted full serial numbers on some Long guns a couple years back .

#1 Is this for security reasons ?

#2. How much of a serial number do I need to post of a Firearm / Pistol / Revolver to get a history or information on a particular firearm ?

1. Yes.
2. Presumably all of the serial number will be required because anything less would not be a serial number.

2. Depends on the manufacturer. Some don't yield any information at all even with a full serial number.

i don't worry about, never had a problem .
The firearms center don't give info out , unless it turns up in a crime, and the police have all that on their computer.
They will not give you any info on anything , unless it is yours.
Now non restricted may not or may be in the system, depending on age, depending on who you want to believe.
If you are wondering about age, than you need most of the number, when I was collecting Marlins, Colts, and Hi Standard pistols , I wanted to know, But that was mainly at gun shows.
Find out the year of manuf., usally first 2-3 # is enough, unless it is a low # production. Winchesters 2 # will give me age , in yrs for a M94 , , now a 1866 I would want more numbers.

The govt already knows what restricted / prohib stuff that you own. The whole 'cover your serial number" came from the U.S. from concerns of false sales or accusations of theft and to not allow the govt have the opportunity to start a data base of some sort.

However, I won't publish serial numbers of my non-restricted stuff, why make it easier for them?
