Hi CGN, original chambering of this Tikka is a 9.3x62mm : long story short the rifle (t3 3.4kg) was purchased to replace (read put out of action) a Ruger 35 Whelen (4.4kg).
This dream was all good an well on paper however 18 months on Im not really a fan of these Big Bangers and the rifle didnt end up as light as intended....... I now have a Marlin 30-06 which Replaces the Tikka 9.3mm for 'bush bash hunting' / loaner rifle for hunters.
Advertising the Big banger has been fruitless for a good priced deal of $1000 incl Dies, 150 brass, rifle in leupold rings No scope........ fairly standard in Aus at the moment, T3s are about $800 2nd hand, new ones about $1200 an the newer T3xs around $1500 aud.... So the deal IMO is good with loading gear and some brass taken into account.
with all of that out of the way, it leaves me with a big hole from .222 remington up until the 7mm-08 remington....
but there is also a plan of potentially 'flogging' off this Marlin 3006 for a few quick Bucks in near future------
around that 7mm-08 class of power, i have the Ruger 1 303 which makes a great rifle for nostalgia and its intended purpose---- safe queen and part time hunter
My min small game is Fox and i feel the .222 is perfectly suited.
the next small game is our Small Fallow deers..... the .243 is minimum cartridge for this deer- among other deer. The 7mm-08 has these covered an combined with a stout Woodleigh it covers the Larger deer aswell (sambar)
with this Particular Tikka 9.3x62 is my bolt face workable for any of the 308/30-06 family cartridges? my thinking is to run a Short action Cartridge inside the big tikka, given plenty of mag length albeit a long action throw (does not matter me slightest) it is what it is on that part of the bargain..
something about .338 projectiles , is missing in the line up but so is that of the 6.5mm gang........ right down to that 6mm/.243 ........
Now, Tikka barrels do pop up from time to time in generally basic calibres... 270 ,25-06 ocaisonally an plenty 308/06s
the price of a new barrel is like the priceof a 2nd hand tikka here----- so to continue the wait of the Sale and then fund the money directly into a new rifle seems the same amount of hassle as customising this Tikka into something else.
What is this Something else???
what can work?
Keen to hear thoughts
