To the west coast SR shooters.....it is not always sunny skies in Ontario.

Man, did it rain this morning and the lightening made things exciting too. I didn't expect to be shooting at Lake Langemark today but there you have it. You never know what you are going to get at a Service Conditions event. Fortunately competitors and their equipment is pretty much water proof so we were able to press on after the worst of the weather. The cardboard target backers however, are anything but water proof. A bit of an organizational gamble did not pay off and we were forced to do a little bit of extra work to get targets setup. But our group was more than willing and we made it happen.

By the time the match actually started, the weather had pretty much cleared completely and we were able to get back to our rapid organizational and shooting pace that our MD had developed. In the end, despite the delayed start and extra work with targets were were able to complete the match on time and be off the range entirely by about 3:30.

The wet conditions naturally added to challenge of the match and was a learning experience for many I'm sure...including me. Mixing wet sand, an aggressive muzzle brake, optical sights and the modified prone was not productive. I was ready for dust and crap getting on me, but caking the objective of scope was not something I had anticipated. Changes are needed. :D

We also seemed to have a higher than normal proportion of new-to-CQB shooters but this did not seem affect the pace of the matches at all. I think it is safe to say that these new shooters were up to the task and/or the experienced shooters with them did a good job in coaching and explaining how things ran. That is a testament to the type of folks who participate in these events. Always willing to talk and help each other out.

To the participants, please post pictures, vids, comments etc below. As always, I am looking forward to Ganderites videos. I seem to recall that all his recording equipment made it through the event this time.

Oh, and I do charge $10.00 for use of my cleaning rod during the scoring phase of the day. Cash or EMT preferred. Laugh2

My shooting is ok, but the damn mental errors cost me at least 25 points per match. Today I forgot to #### the rifle for one match. Darn near broke the trigger when the whistle blew... And then my mag shifted in the metal coupler so that the coupler prevented the mag from seating. Those 5 rounds never got fired.

Great fun. Thanks guys. Pictures and video to follow, after my nap.

I shot some video. Will post after I edit to improve my scores...

NAP?????

Note to Tim, next time bring a defibulator:D

Great day, too bad some got scared of the rain, not mentioning any names...;)

First match of the year for me. Gotta lot of practice to do (especially pistol - always the weak link!!). Never fired in modified prone before, nor on the move. Cool stuff.

Oh no....Bolivar is getting his Hulk On.....and his up $20
What fun...shower and foot bath in the morning.
But at the end of the day......nice weather.
Come on.....August 18th

I brought a guest. he has shot a pistol before. He use to carry concealed and had to qualify from time to time. he had shot a shotgun, but told me he had never fired a rifle in his life.

He shot my Norc NZ75 very well and shot my new CZ58 shorty in 223 (the $399 Wolverine rifle deal). Other than the trick of having to lever in the mag at an angle, he ran the rifle well. Atypical newbie, he fired all his rifle shots but only one mag of his pistol in transitions.

As his safety guy, I was able to see how my rifle performed. This was the first outing for it. The open sight has been removed and a peep sight installed. This worked well. I tested it in the mad minute. It shot about 1" low from POA.

This was also the first outing for my new Norinco 1911 in 9mm. I used to shoot a CZ 85. The 1911 is much heavier and I found it a bit faster on recovery. Absolute accuracy is not as good as the CZ, but good enough.

My pistol shooting has improved since the CQB clinic with PHRacing.

Still editing the video. One thing i see on the video is that there is a big difference in rifle recoil between a 7.72 CZ858 and a 223 M4gery.

Was an awesome day, modified prone is certianly a challenge but also a ton of fun. Was almost betting shotting it when it was soaking wet compared to being dry.

Was certainly a great first time experience. Thanks to Ganderite for great advise and tips. Even though it was a rainy morning the sun after lunch was pretty strong (Note to self: Put some sunblock next time to avoid having a bad burnt neck the next day...LOL).

Here is the first video. As I watch and edit the videos some details are learning opportunities. In this video I noticed that there appears to be very little muzzle flip with my M4gery. The 223 has less kick than then 7.62x39, which helps. I installed a Dlask muzzle brake almost immediately, so can't be sure how difference it makes, but I am pleased with the combo. I can double tap at 10 yards and get 2 good hits. I need the time for the pistol.

The other detail I can see is that except for the 10 yard shots, I forgot to keep aiming higher as I got closer. As a result most of my shots went out the bottom.

I should also learn to waddle faster....

While I am waiting for the next video to upload to You Tube (takes about an hour), I have been thinking about the rifle ammo. It does not take a lot of power to punch a hole in a paper target 30 yards away.

I download the 223 ammo I make for CQB.

The M4 has the gas port positioned closer to the chamber than the regular AR15. As a result the port pressure is higher. Full power ammo really batters the action, so there is another advantage of loading to START loads, rather than Max loads.

I find the M4 will run at much lower pressures than an AR15 so the ammo I make for it won't cycle a regular AR15.

The 223 CZ58 has a short barrel but the gas port is not closer to the chamber. It won't run with my M4 ammo either. For the AR and CZ I use a load 2gr under max. This drops velocity about 200 fps.

I don't reload for the CQB 7.62x39 ammo. I use whatever surplus is at hand. It typically has about 25gr of powder. In my CZs, I can pull the bullet, dump 7 gr of powder and re-seat the bullet. This drops velocity from 2300 to about 1600 fps. The kick and muzzle jump is reduced. I only use the reduced power ammo in the Rapid stages, if I use the CZ.

I did not use a CZ this time, but might next match. The AR is a better platform, but my CZ 7.62 has a peep sight. The lower sight line will reduce the group shift as I move closer.

Oops. Video is ready...
