Greetings,

As I am trying to get into Tactical shooting of some kind, and trying to do it as inexpensively as possible (without getting an SKS or other Red rifle, no offense, just not my cup of tea); and not wanting to go the Restricted rifle route, I was wondering if a Ruger Mini 14 tarted up with a Tapco stock would be a viable substitute?

I know all the AR-15/M-16/M-4 variants can get use the 10rd pistol mags, but are a lot of shooters doing that or just learning to do quick mag changes after 5rds?

I am hoping to get out on the 11th to actually watch a match and hopefully next year I can think about trying to compete.

Is there a website with rules, equipment list and course of fire description I could go to to familiarise myself with the game before I show up?

Thank you very much.

With Greatest Respect,

Matt

Hey,

A regular Mini would be just fine. You wouldn't even need the Tapco stock unless you like it.

We only use 5 round mags anyway. Hungry and TimK like to force the mag changes under pressure.

Look in the service rifle forum under Hungry's sticky at the top. There you will find a list of kit you need to have. And come on out to the range and bring your kit to participate! There is no sense in watching.

OH and welcome to CGN!

Greetings,

I would love to bring my kit and join, but unless you have a paintball category, I will be just watching. I am gunless at the moment as I sold my cowboy guns when I stopped shooting Cowboy Action Shooting. But as I am currently waiting to hear back from the CF about my application I turned my attention towards the tactical end of the spectrum.

So it may take the winter to get all the stuff I need and join a handgun club. As always, money and time are the only things stopping me LOL.

Matt

Matt,

Yeah that figures. It does take up alot of time and money to get into it, but action shooting is the greatest sport going IMO.

Well if you decide that you are coming up, there are always guys around to answer questions. Even try thier kit if time alots for it.

Take Care, and maybe we will see you there.

Joining the Army? Get an AR, be it a $600 Norinco or something a little richer. Training with something totally different from what you will use in a fight is dumb. Do the paperwork, suck up the restricted BS and invest in your survival (and have fun doing it).

$600 Norinco M4
$600 Aimpoint (used)
$150 5X 5/30 rnd mags

There you go a good 200m fighting rifle and a great training aid.

A mini 14 would be fine. You will need 5 mags, plus a spare or two in case of a mag failure. We seldom use 10 round mags for CQB because of the round count required for each portion of the match. If you are putting an optic on it, get something of a lower power magnification, consider a variable powered optic. Pistol, should be a decent quality pistol, spend the extra money and get one with decent sights and reliable action. Not a 100 Marstar Tokarev. (some here have experience with these models ;) LOL ) You'll need at least 2 pistol mags.

Some may disagree with this statement, but service CQB as done at Borden is NOT true "tactical shooting", however, it's a good course of fire and one which will make you intimately fimailiar with your kit. It will higlight areas that need to be worked on in your shooting.

Cheers

Matt

Greetings,

Thank you all for the advice. As for a pistol I am still torn between the venerable 1911 in a Commander model and something a little ###ier. May try and find a Norc Sig copy or maybe I will treat myself to a new S&W MP. However, as always, time and money are always the deciding factors.

I hope I can make it out on Sept 11th and see what it is all about.

I have the M&P and a 1911. I like the 1911 for this game personally. I like the M&P for doing real close and fast shooting like room entry stuff.. seems to work better for me. The 1911 is nice for its heavier platform which makes it easier for me to hit sh!t a longer distances. :D YMMV

What are the rd count requirements for a pistol? Will I be able to get by with a Commanders 7 rd mag or will I constantly be doing mag changes on the run?

Thanks,

Matt

If the mags weren't so insanely expensive for the mini-14 that would a smart choice. But at something like 90-100$ a pop You'd be better served with a Norc M4 and LAR mags, etc.

You can Also get a VZ for CQB, mags aren't overly expensive, you already start off with 4 and you can dress it up for pretty much any action shooting.

I agree, 2 pistol mags is all you need and we load only 5 rds max in the pistol magazine. Plink as also right about "tactical shooting"... we are not preparing you to shoot 'tactically'. We are preparing you to shoot a course of fire (read: competition). Often we get critics bugging us that we are training you for other (real or perceived) purposes, but just a reminder; "It's only a match."

Come on out on 11 Sep Sat and smell the powder burn.
