Can anyone explain to me the difference between "service pressure" and "maximum proof pressure" please? I have never heard these terms before, so am looking for clarification on the matter.
Service pressure is also described as maximum average working pressure, the design pressure of the cartridge. These are documented by SAAMI (Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute).
Proof pressure is the higher pressure a particular firearm is tested to at manufacture. It is usually about 1.4 times the "service pressure" of the cartridge, and used just to make sure the firearm "stays together" at a higher pressure.
From SAAMI
CARTRIDGE, DEFINITIVE PROOF
A cartridge loaded to specific pressures higher than service loads. Used only for testing assembled firearms or elements of firearms which contain the primary firing pressure.
PROOF MARK
A stamp applied at or near the breech or other stressed component of a firearm after it has passed a proof test.
PROOF TEST
The test of an assembled firearm or individual components by firing a Definitive Proof Cartridge
