Having been asked what kind of support I would like to receive from my unit, I asked around other local units about what they are doing to help their members with (in our cases) BCRA service rifle events.

So far what I got is that a unit might include it in the training plan, pay for food and travel of members attending, days pay of the event and event fee. DCRA membership fees are the responsibility of the member.

Is this fairly typical for reserve units? What about reg force units?

I asked the above on Army.ca, but I am getting nothing so far. The info I got is from an acquaintance at the BCR.

Anybody here has suggestions?

Hey, don't forget your ammo.:D Enjoy what support you have while you can. Us civvies even have to supply our own rifles. Which sometimes isn't all that bad.

If your unit supports a Service Rifle Team (which every unit should!) they should equip you, pay you, feed you, support you with ammo etc. Full support. Getting units to pay for BCRA and DCRA memberships or range fees is a little tougher and quite expensive for a small unit budget. The critical thing is to get a small group of dedicated shooters who can put the time into training and show tangible benefits (like winning) to time and money being spent on training and competing. You would be a uniformed member of the CF representing your unit at that competition and the unit is responsible to pay for it. Your end of the deal is making sure the public money is well spent in your training and representing the CF as a professional organization.

Supporting soldiers who compete individually is another matter. Members have competed before in uniform, been paid, given TD money etc but shot with their own weapons and ammo, transported themselves etc. If someone is shooting with their own gun, own ammo, out of uniform the CF is highly unlikely to throw public money at supporting someone`s hobby, its not impossible or illegal, its just unlikely.

The CF will not give anybody CF ammo to fire out their own guns and will not issue CF weapons and ammo to individuals shooting out of uniform or on unlicensed (by the CF) ranges. A good example of this in BC is the KTSA in Kamloops. That range is not licensed by DND and CF weapons are not permitted to be fired there. Uniformed soldiers however do shoot at the KTSA service rifle or pistol shoots, they just use their own guns (preferable in some cases:D).

Western Area is supporting a reserve team this year to shoot at CFSAC so ask your chain of command for details which should be released soon to the Reserve Brigades out west.

Hope to see you at CFSAC.

We shoot at KTSA without any problem and have done so for quite a few years.
My unit pays for everything exept BCRA membership($20) which is up to the member.Match fees are paid by the unit.
The LFWA reserve team info is already out.
