Hello All,

I am trying to do some research into my new M91 but am having difficulty finding out details of this particular factory's production numbers. Can someone help please?

I need to figure out, if each year they started from 1, or if they started from a set number like the Finns did (such as 20,000). Also, what the total production for 1917 was, as I am trying to place my rifle in reference to the so-called October Revolution (which actually started June-July or so but just wasn't a revolution yet, more a revolt.)

I have looked online, and found no information, maybe some of you book worms will know.

Thanks,
Adrian

If I remember right. Sestroryetsk started production of the M91 in 1897(? - going from memory here) and stopped production in 1917 or 1918 as there is some speculation that some 1917 dated rifles were pu together into 1918.

I've never seen published production figures and none of my reference books have any.

As you may know, the M91 was adopted in 1891, but most factories started production between 1893 and 1897, the American makers a bit later ;)

Claven,

Yes sir, I have heard that before. Shame I will never know, well I can assume that in 1917 they were producing few rifles, but I wish I knew if they were batched or had any sort of digit numbering system, other than going from 1 each new year.

Cheers,
D

Extract from "The Mosin-Nagant Rifle by Terence W. Lapin"

Can't see it in the book but I believe they stopped Mosin-Nagant rifles after WWI but continued with other arms until 1941, and the factory still exists to-day http://www.toolfactory.ru/en/, does not make firearms. Lapin mentions numbers are very hard to come by due to secrecy by the Russians, does not break down numbers per factory only 1892-1922 9.3 Million made.

This is true- the Russians had never put the exactly right serial numbers on the rifles, witch they made in the arsenal every year. They could missed 10 000 to 100 000 or duplicate the numbers. In the Sestroretsk 1917 I have # 83 000,and think they could make many times more.

...As you may know, the M91 was adopted in 1891, but most factories started production between 1893 and 1897,...

In 1891 only Tula made very few rifles. In 1892 all 3 factories started production.I have Izevsk 1892 by the # 4200.

..and stopped production in 1917 or 1918 as there is some speculation that some 1917 dated rifles were pu together into 1918...

The last year of prodaction in Sestroretsk- 1917, but very few was made(and dated) in 1918

'''Well, my rifle is number 36522 in 1917. I would think this would be around April or late March production. What are your thoughts. '''

They could make 200 000 per year,so may be it's right.

''Factory still around and mentions the Mosin.''

The Sestroretskiy Zavod is still working. They stopped production of firearms, because after 1917 Finns took part of Russian land up to river Sestra, witch is 2 km from the factory. So,they started to make tools.
