I am reloading for my 50AE using Lee dies and Barry's bullets and having problems with bullet set back. After I reload a cartridge, I can push the bullet in to the casing with moderate hand pressure. When I measure the inside of a sized case neck, it measure's 0.49"-0.50" and the bullet measures 0.49". I also noticed the barry bullets are tampered, 0.50" at the base and 0.49" before the Ojive.

I even backed my expansion die all the way off to zero and no improvement. I don't even need to expand the mouth to balance a bullet when seating...

So is this an issue with my Lee sizing die or are the bullets to blame?

Luckily am using Win296 so when this happen while firing I had no issues with overpressure or a kaboom.

Are you using a lee 3 die set or a lee 4 die set
use
use size die
flair die
Seat die

are you putting too much flair on your case ?

if you are still having problems it might be bullet is too much undersize or dies are out of spec.

Do not shoot near me until you fix your problem

thinking a full case of powder will stop bullet set back and it is ok to do so is DANGEROUS

3 dies set and I even tried no flare and no improvement. They don't make a roll crimp die for 50AE and you would not want to roll crimp a auto casing anyway. I might try buying some hornaby bullets and see what they measure, worst case I might need new dies.

I am in Trenton ont.

What is the diameter of your expander?

What is the inside diameter of the case after sizing and before expanding? Could you get by without expanding the case?

You could have thin brass, a over sized sizing die or over sized expander, the expander should be .002 to .003 smaller than bullet diameter.

Example of a Lyman type "M" expander die below, as you can see the main part of the expander is .003 smaller than bullet diameter.

NOTE, pausing at the top of the ram stroke for 3 to 5 seconds reduces brass spring back during sizing. If your chamber is on the large size the case wants to spring back to its fired diameter after sizing. This happens more as the brass work hardens with use and the spring back increases with brass hardness.

sounds like a bad batch of bullets from berry's. Do you have any other bullets to try and see if the bullet can be pushed back into the case?
