Hi, new to the site;
I have a marlin 444 with a ported barrel. The wood stock has seen better days. Its not badly cracked but a screw dug into the fore stock (by last owner!!!) I was wondering if anyone new where i could find replacement?
It also has the ghost rings which are nice for quick shots but hard to be a "tack driver" or even close, Is there a scope (4x) that would give LOTS of eye relief AND have the quickness of iron sights?
Any tips on shoulder protection? 10 shots=big bruise!

Do not know what your expectations with the word "tackdriver" and .444 lever action in the same thread.

I have found that the ghost rings far out advantage the use of any scope for quick sighting and accuracy.

My experience with this caliber is accuracy will be found with handloads to which you rifle likes. If not a handloader I found the accuracy difference between the junk remington sells as .444 ammo and the Hornady to be day and night. The hornady 265 grain ammo is great and my groups shrank at 100m drastically.
Practise always helps as well.

Deke, I do use the hornadys (265) and noticed a little better. Atleast now I'm on paper at 100 yds!! I'd like to see about a 6 in group. But I haven't been hunting with it yet, so I'm not sure how ghost rings would perform under bush conditions.
I used to load my own (30-06) but just not enough time in the day!!
Haggisbasher; I want to REDUCE recoil. I got the gun simply as a "bush" short range (50-200 yrd). Plus I love the look and power of it!! And yes the 30-06 does take down a moose quite well.

If you like the Hornady but lust for more power and are willing to fork out a little more have a look at the loads made by Cor-Bon and Buffalo Bore.
Cor-Bon make a 280gn FPSN and 305gn Penetrator FN FMJ.
Buffalo Bore make similar loads as well as a hard Cast 335gn(or 330gn) at around 2050fps.
All of those produce a ME of about 3000 ft/lbs although their effective range of 100yds to 150yds.
It's a pity you don't reload.
Bear Tooth Bullets make 355gn and 405gn:)eek:) hardcast gas-checked WLN FNs in 44 cal which apparently a have proven record against Cape buffalo and rhino.
Mind you you'd want a good limb saver pad for a load like that and would only want to spend a little time on the bench.:(

NOW we're talking!!! Where can I find Cor-Bon in Canada? Buffalo Bore? Does the limb saver pad slip on or screw on? I don't want to take away from the classic look to much. Any other recoil pads to make the pain go away?
I'm a skinny little runt!

try 46 grns of h 4198 with the hornady 265 it groups under an inch and a half. for a scope luep 4x four inches if eye relief and around nine oz in weight

"...other recoil pads..." Pachmayr makes a slip on that works well. They make a pre-fit screw on type specifically for Marlins too. Mind you, if you've been shooting off a bench, you'll find a lot of the felt recoil goes away when you stand up.
Have a look at a Burris mini-scope. 4" eye relief, low magification, light weight scope that won't bugger the balance of your rifle the way a bigger one will. Not exactly inexpensive though.

Hi Sunray,

Is this the actual model name of these scopes? I can't seem to find anything about them on the Burris website. I am interested in these as well.

Thanks, Jeff.

i have a burris 4x compact with 20mm objective. eye relief is huge and the scope is very compact. seems pretty durable i had it on a marlin 44 mag and tried it on a blr 358. there listed as short mag scopes on the burris site.

What, you forgot already!? At a 100 yards, 5 in (?) high and left with the ghost rings. (I think it was closer, wasn't it?)
Site looks good, learning lots already, thanks for the info

Setting up a 444

Hello there. Currently I have my Marlin setup with a Simmons 8 point 1.5-5 variable power scope. It has clear optics and plenty of eye relief. I have it sighted in with Hornady 265 gr slugs under CCI -200 primers and 43 grains of H4198. Sighted inch and a half high at fifty yards. Nice gun and very versatile to load for. 240Cast slugs under some 15 grains of Unique powder and some dacron filler tame the recoil and are great for most shooting. Heavier loads with Speer Unicore 300 grains would flatten anything that you could point at in North America too. Great cartridge and rifle too. Regards

I have a williams peep on mine, which I like. Have not tried a scope. I put a grind to fit limbsaver recoil pad on it. I load the 265 gr Hornady's over imr 4198.
